Studying topics well before being discussed in class.. Useful?

Does anyone study a topic way before it is brought up in class? Does this really help?

I want to try this method for once. Never done it before because I believe I would just forget it later on. Do any of you guys do this method of study? If so, how was it?

Would it work for math?

I got a Calculus 3 course coming up, and have access to all my professors' previous course homework, notes, and test solutions. Got a whole month free, and planning to study all his notes and do his homework assignments.

For me, its extrememly helpful. Trying to study all over winter break didnt work out too well because I was unfocused and lazy, but knowing the topic, or at least being familiar with it before class helps tremendously. I feel like professors/teachers tend to go over complex topics quickly, and that its good to have prior knowledge so that class is the second time you’re seeing it, not the first.

Most of my freshman daughter’s professors post a syllabus with the reading that go with the class for each day. If you read them before the lecture it works better (which has also been her teachers’ expectation).

I’m not exactly sure about its usefulness with math, but for more abstract topics like social sciences, it’s definitely in your best interest to read the material related to the lecture, before the actual lecture. And then again after. Professors generally tend to expect you to have read the material before class (if on the syllabus) anyways.

I’ve looked over the syllabus and flipped through the textbook before classes start, but i’m usually a hardcore crammer.

Well, I try to. When I do, its very helpful, especially in my science classes.
