You ever do something in the heat of the moment only to regret it not too long after? Who am I kidding, of course you have. Anyway, I happened to write my Common App (prompt 1) essay on some real personal stuff. Talked about how I used to be a pessimist and how I used to see the world in such a bad light. Tried to get into how I changed and became an "optimist" but didn't really do a good job at it. Only managed to fit it in near the end. Long story short, I submitted that essay to a bunch of my top colleges. Will such a negative topic hurt my chances at gaining entrance to colleges?

Sounds dreary. Hopefully you made your point. You will soon see. No use worrying about it now unless you want to put some extra safety applications in to make sure you have offers. Depending on the school a good essay can matter a lot or just a little. Some schools are much more numbers driven. It’s always good to sit on the essay for a few days and revisit it before sending.
