What exactly does it mean to "defer" your admission?
Let's say, you get into a college you really want to go to but you decide you want to take a year off before. Can you just ask if your admission can be deferred? Will they most likely say yes, that you can go the following year?

What is this whole "Deferring" thing about?

Deferrals are used during the ED and EA programs. To be deferred means that you did not get in early, and instead your application will be placed into the RD pool and be reconsidered for admission.

If you were already accepted to a college and then decide to take a year off, most likely you'll have to reapply to that school.

I do believe you can defer your matriculation (for a semester or a year sometimes, depending on the college) - I'd contact the admissions office and ask. You probably have to have a good reason to do so though, like definite plans for your year off.

^Gotcha. Thanks very much for clearing that up.

Do you think most colleges will let a student take a year off after acceptance, say, if they decide to work or to travel or something along those lines?
