any one else Really frustrated with that question?? they talk about leadership then someone who has shaped culture and thought. do they want a leader who has shaped? ugh i'm starting really late too i know...

Yeah, I just submitted one of the worst essays I've ever written for that question.

whatev, its what they get for asking such a dumb question....

My S wrote about his cross country coach who is an author, a doctor and has influended a lot of students in the community and about the culture he established for their team. He was accepted to CMC and Pomona, Other students wrote about historical figures but some about smaller leaders in their circle. It is pretty open.Good luck!

any ideas on length????
i think mines turnigng into a history paper

mine was about a page, single spaced. mine was also quite the history paper, with disjointed ideas and rambling.

lol, i actually just dug up a euro paper, and now i'm cutting and pasting......

are we suppose to mention ourselves in the essay? how we are leaders in making?

nice cheesy, i pretty much copy and pasted wikipedia

Mine was on John Locke! Really boring, philosophical. Embarrassed to turn it in for a demonstration of my analytical skills, but I'm hoping my interesting topic and other stuff make up for the essay. (couldn't they just have said send a writing sample of a history or english paper or somethin?!)

did you guys talk about yourselves and tied the essay back to how you are a leader in the making?

Definately didn't talk about myself... Probably woulda sounded more cliched. They can look at my ec's and stuff and decide whether or not I'm a leader in the making.

why did they put "In fact, one of the ways we describe CMC students is "Leaders in the Making."?

i had a good one: the guy who stood up 2 the tank in tienamen square. tied it to the collective "power of the unknown" and my ideas on peace/politics and what not.

I wrote about Adam Smith, and got in early decision.....

I wrote about Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Dutch MP...and related it myself in one sentence.

i wrote about william randolph hearst and got in ed

why would they really want a history paper on some guy? of course they want it to relate to you. i hope.

mine was definitely more of a history paper. it was like one page...so not like a research paper exactly. i didn't relate it to myself at allllll. i think that was taken care of in the actual common app essay. the spin you put on the historical figure makes it sort of personal. i think the supp is more to see tha tyou can write analytically and present your thoughts well.
