Hello, I'm planning on applying early decision to Syracuse University. I have learned that the interview is considered with the application if I take part in one. I wanted to see if anyone had gone through the interview process with a Syracuse admissions counselor and thought it helped you along in the process? Would you recommend this to me or other students that could be interested?

Most definitely do an interview. I applied RD and I know the interview really helped. It helps the admissions counselor to get to know the actual person behind all the words on your application and essay. Also, if you do decide to do an interview make sure you ask questions afterwards. I’m sure the more interested you seem will really help you.

Thanks Mbowen. That is what I was originally was assuming… I wanted to clarify because some colleges only do interviews in regards to making sure everything with your application has been submitted, etc. The interview that Syracuse seems to hold could appear to help my chance of getting accepted…

absolutely do an interview. if you have anything regarding grades which you want to talk about, bring an unofficial transcript with you. be prepared for questions about leadership and how you embody syracuse’s scholarship in action. i found my interview to be pretty casual–about an hour of just talking about possible majors, your high school experience, what you want from college, etc. don’t stress over it too much. honestly, i wasn’t even dressed up for my interview. all you really want to do is make a personal connection and leave a mark so that your admissions officer knows who you are when he’s reading your application. just be yourself and you’ll be fine.

So when I apply in a year or so go for a interview?

Yes the same year you apply, schedule an interview.

is there something I check on the application? And I’m assuming you attend Syracuse? Is it getting more competitive to get accepted? Because to be honest my grades aren’t all that great. But it’s where I’ve always dreamed of going ever since I was in elementary school.

I’m an incoming freshman at SU. Uh, on the Common App there’s a box that you check if you’ve had an interview so if you had one or are planning to have one before the deadline for whenever you’re applying, check the box. I know this year, it was a 49% acceptance rate whereas the year before, it was 60% so I would say it is getting more competitive. Don’t let that discourage you though. My grades weren’t all that great either (I had a 3.1 GPA) but I had amazing recommendations, a strong essay, and the interview helped loads I’m sure. My first semester senior grades were also really strong as well. If it’s your dream school, don’t give up.

thanks mbowen93! I don’t wanna give up, and never plan on it. If I give how could I fault them on not accepting me. Is a 3.1 GPA a 80? and GPA just means all grades put together for high school so far right? If you don’t mind me asking, who were your “amazing” recommendations and what was the interview like?

Most definitely don’t give up! SU was my dream school and I got in so you can do it as well! A 3.1 GPA is equivalent to an 85-86%. And yes GPA is just the grades put together from all years of high school. I was lucky in that I did the summer college program at SU last summer so I got a recommendation from my professor, 3 from teachers in my school, and 1 guidance counselor. Honestly the more, the merrier. Recs can only help, not hurt. My two friends who also got accepted to SU and are attending didn’t do the summer college program, had lower GPA’s than I had, and were still accepted. My interview was kind of intimidating at first. I had Lonnie Morrison who is the Metropolitan Admissions director. He’s a very straightforward man who knows exactly who and what he’s looking for. As the interview went on, I began to get more comfortable and our conversation just flowed. Ask plenty of questions because it not only prolongs your interview, but also shows how interested you are in attending SU. Also, bring a copy of your unofficial transcript as well.

Unoffical transcript as in the transciprt I didn’t send in? Okay that’s incouraging news I thought I would need a mega GPA for SU and I just don’t have it. I still have a year or so until I have to work at this but it wouldbe be nice to have it in place and have ideas.

And what exactly is this summer program your talking about?

Are they alumni interviews or are they on campus?

Yes the unofficial transcript is the one you don’t send in. It shouldn’t have your school’s official seal stamped on it. The summer college program is a program that is designed for rising juniors and seniors. You can take an array of different classes and get up to 6 or 7 credits. I did mine last summer and was on a scholarship because I’m from NYC. I took Media Literacy and a writing class.

nasali2012, it varies. You can have an interview with alumni, an admissions representative, or on campus.
