I’ve taken two subject tests and scored a 700 on biology and 780 on math 2, but both scores are below the 98th percentile. Should I even submit them? The Vanderbilt admissions rep told me that anything below the 98th percentile will only hurt my application, so should I just not send any subject tests?
“Anything below the 98th percentile will only hurt you.” NONSENSE!
A 780 on Math 2 is a most impressive score. An 800 still isn’t the 98th percentile because of how skewed the test takers are in their mathematical prowess. Do you think the top schools reject applicants for getting the maximum score of 800 on Math 2 simply because it’s not a percentile above a given threshold? Of course not. I would very much question the validity of what that rep told you. Granted, a 700 on biology isn’t the most amazing score for that particular test, BUT, it’s certainly respectable, and you can rest assured that it won’t be the reason for your rejection, especially in the ED I round. Anything above 700 is the hard and fast rule for these tests in the general admissions context for top schools, and it has been for a while. Definitely send that Math 2 score and ignore the nonsense that this particular rep gave you on this particular issue.
I’m not so sure I would be too quick to say what Vandy says is nonsense since they, not us, make the decisions (even if we disagree). My D was told the same thing before she applied last year, and heeded the advice. An 800 on Math 2 is a given since it’s the highest score. Since subject tests aren’t required, maybe they are emphasizing that applicants should only submit extras if they enhance an application (and are stating what they consider to be enhancing). I’m sure it’s not a deal-breaking rule, but you’re not the only one who was told that. Why not call the admissions office and ask? Was the rep your regional rep? I would want confirmation. My D submitted an 800 or I would have suggested the same to her. Best wishes!
