Subject Tests?

My biggest reach school is Georgetown which requires 3 subject tests. I would have applied EA which doesn’t require any, but it has to be a disadvantage when there are applicants with 3 high scores. The problem is, I only have one and am only prepared for one more. I took Bio and can take Math II but I have not taken any other classes that fit well with the subject test material. I was going to try to self study one but I just don’t have time even in the summer. Should I just give up on Georgetown?

Your lack of three subject tests is not a reason to give up on Georgetown. Remember, competitive colleges are holistic in their review process, so certain things are allowed to slide. With that being said, aim for three subject tests. Take Math II and try for a humanities one, like Lit or US History (those are the easiest two, I’ve heard). Self-studying is fine, though you’ll have to be dedicated in order to get a top score.

@DeeperBlue25 Do you think AP Lang is decent preparation for the lit subject test? Obviously AP Lit would be better but I will have AP Lang next year. It’s a block for half the year so I could have a large portion of the class done if I get deferred and need the subject test for RD.

AP Lang is actually the best preparation for the lit subject test, since this test is actually a misnomer, and is all about reading passages and comprehension, almost like the SAT, and AP Lang MC prepares you well for it.

AP Lit would prepare you more. Lit is known as the hardest subject test out there (even if you have a 800 CR score)

@hhjjlala I haven’t taken AP Lit yet so I wouldn’t know haha but Lit doesn’t seem too bad to me. I took a practice test after finishing AP Lang and scored a 790.

I have no opinion on if it is or isn’t, However, very few students take AP Lit earlier than Senior year, so the course will really be of no help.

IMO, the SAT Lit Subject Test is a misnomer; it’s really CR on steroids. AP Lang should be more than adequate.

I assume you’ve taken U.S History in high school. Even if it wasn’t AP or even if you feel that you don’t know enough USH, you’re at least largely familiar with most of the topics tested. Grab a prep book (I recommend Larry Krieger’s USH Subject Test book) and study your butt off.

@neoking We have two US History classes at our school and I’m taking the next one next year so I don’t really have an adequate background in it yet. Its not AP or honors either, just regulars.

So do you guys think it would be ok for me to apply EA to Georgetown with only the one subject test and take the other two if I get deferred? There is no rejection in Georgetown EA so I could take the subject tests after I get deferred, which is when my AP Lang class will be done.

bump for above question ^

Your course of action sounds logical enough. I don’t know how your school works so I can’t advise you to self-study or skip ahead or anything. In general, don’t fret about the standardized testing. Take them when you feel comfortable. As @bzhang42 and @skieurope said, AP Lang is great prep for the lit subject test. For now, focus on your EC’s, develop your passions, find great teachers for recs, and research other colleges, not just reach, but also potential match and safety schools.

What are your other stats?

@suzyQ7 Honestly, not that great for a school like Georgetown. I’ll copy my stats from another thread.

Objective:
GPA: 97 UW, 99 W(4.0 UW on 4 scale)
SAT: 1460/1600 new SAT(1410/2090 when converted to old) retaking June
SAT II: 720 Bio E
Rank- 2/110
Course Rigor- 7 APs, 10 Honors throughout high school, most rigorous in my school

ECs:
FBLA-2 years- treasurer(11), president(12)- 1st at regionals, ~30th place at states
Model UN- 2 years- treasurer(12)- best delegate, 3 events per year
Tennis- 3 years- Varsity team, club team, clinics year round, #3 sometimes #2 singles on varsity team
Tennis volunteering- helping out at local clinics over this summer for our district residents(75 hrs)
Students against destructive decisions(SADD)-4 years-treasurer(11)
Engineering competition-11-12th
Recycling club- 9-12th- President(12)
Piano- seven years- private lessons

I think my GPA and rank are very strong, my SAT is literally the average, and my ECs are quite average also.

@Classof2017 :-< Your stats are fine and certainly on-target for a school like G’Town… However, I would lose the self-deprecating “woe is me” attitude; that will not help you at all.

@skieurope Sorry if it came off like that, certainly don’t want to sound like one of those CC perfectionist kids. I would consider myself “average excellent” as I know I have great stats but not that one standout thing like a hook, interesting background, high level award, etc to separate me from other high stat Asians. I did say I thought my objective stats were great but I still do think my ECs hold me back which is why I don’t want to miss subject tests if they could really help me EA. Again, sorry if it came out as whiny/pessimistic.
