Submitted app confirmation question

My D submitted her app via the Common App a couple of days ago. She hasn’t received anything from USC confirming. Also when she logs into you.usc.edu there isn’t anything about App Status yet even though it’s the same email address used to apply.

Anyone know how long before USC links your Common App submission with the portal?

In my D’s case, it took a few weeks. It is a little more challenging when dealing with 50K applicants, but they will eventually get it all set and working for her…

Dolemite, any news yet? my D submitted her app via Common App I THINK about 6 days ago, and while she did create a log in, I can’t remember now how that came about! And when she logs in, I find understanding her application status and what documents they do or don’t have very confusing. Hope you don’t mind if I piggyback on your thread and say what I’m seeing and ask if anyone can shed light on it?

I DO see on the page that says Check Application Status that it says she has no messages and that “We have received your Common Application and USC Writing Supplement. To find out if we need more information from you, please click on the ‘Submit application documents’ link. You will be able to submit any requested documents through the Required Documents tab.”

So then I go back a page and click on Required Documents and under that tab, the only one I see right now is Combined SAT/ACT score - it says this is Documents for Upload or Fax but then the little “i” button says she needs to order the official scores to be sent (of course) which she already did when she first submitted her application which I THINK was around 11/20. The tab that says Received Documents has a list of document types with a dash next to them like:

  • Academic History
  • Additional Info
  • Common Application
  • Supplemental PDF
  • Teacher Evaluation
  • Undergraduate Application

But I can’t tell from this page if they have any of these or not.

WWWard, can you shed any light on how to read these different sections? Thanks!

@CAtransplant Once you are able to log-in and access your you.usc.edu webpage, on the upper-left, you will see various links. The “Check Your Application Status” link will take you to basic updates and messages, if applicable. In my D’s case, her page says “We have received your Common Application and USC Supplement, and it appears we require no additional information at this time.”

The “Submit application documents” link will let you see if there are items still required to be sent and all those received. In my D’s case, under Required Documents it says “None”. Under Received Documents, it says…

  • Academic History instruction
  • Additional Info
  • Combined SAT Score or ACT Score instruction
  • Combined SAT Score or ACT Score instruction
  • Common Application instruction
  • Counselor Recommendation
  • Coursework in Progress
  • High School Transcript instruction
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Secondary School Report instruction
  • Supplement PDF instruction
  • Supplement PDF instruction
  • Teacher Evaluation
  • Teacher Evaluation
  • Undergraduate Application

(The “i” symbol merely stands for “instruction”)

So anything appearing as you listed above is received. If you click on Required Documents and it shows nothing, you should be set…

@WWWard thank you, this is very helpful. So I see the message “We have received your Common Application and Supplement” but it doesn’t say “it appears we require no additional information at this time” - rather, it says “To find out if we need more information from you, please click on the “Submit application documents” link. You will be able to submit any requested documents through the Required Documents tab.” Then as I mentioned, under required documents it has:

Combined SAT or ACT score - so that apparently hasn’t been received though I did h ave it sent maybe a week ago
(but with Thanksgiving and all it may take a while for it to get there and get logged in I’m sure).

and under Received Documents it has:

  • Academic History instruction
  • Additional Info
  • Common Application instruction
  • Supplement PDF instruction
  • Teacher Evaluation
  • Undergraduate Application

From Naviance Detailed Status it seems the GC hasn’t submitted her transcript and Counselor Rec letter yet (and I did talk to her, I know she said she was working on those for students who has apps due Dec. 1 before she could get to later deadline ones). I know D also requested 3 teacher recs and only one has submitted but I know those are not all required either. I guess I was just confused by it not saying the transcript and counselor letter are missing or required still. Oh well, I shall try not to worry about it - thanks for the clarification!

@Dolemite I hope you’ve been able to log in and see your D’s app status?

@CAtransplant You’re welcome.

If you go back to actstudent.org or collegeboard.org you can see if the ACT or SAT was actually submitted to an individual college or not yet. Most colleges then update about 24 hours later.

As for GCs and teachers, all you can really do is remind them of deadlines. Some USC Schools do require letters of recommendation… SCA for example requires the receipt of three by Dec 1st.

Good Luck…

@WWWard oh really about some of the schools requiring letters of rec? Yikes - my D did not apply to SCA - she applied to be a Cognitive Science major - which is in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and as far as I can tell I don’t think there are any letters of rec or anything special required. I just checked the website and looked at this page that shows additional major requirements http://admission.usc.edu/firstyear/prospective/additionalrequirements.html
and don’t see Cog Sci on there - so hopefully we’re ok at this point!

Yes, I suggested to D to gently remind the teachers about her letters and let them know she has submitted her apps so even though the deadlines are far off, if they could get the letters in sooner that would be nice. And the GC knows we’ve submitted everything so I think she’ll get to it as soon as she can.

Thanks again. Good luck to your daughter too.

Editing to add: just checked CollegeBoard and I see they have NOT sent the scores - and they haven’t sent most of the ones I requested yet! USC and others say “Awaiting Fulfillment.” Frustrating!

@CAtransplant

Yes… the requirements can vary by School. Not sure if all USC applicants understand that.

My daughter actually applied in early August to USC, but it took her recommenders many weeks to get them sent in. The same with her GC. Basically, she reminded them each every two weeks until they got around to it

As for ACT/SAT, I recall ACT taking about a week to get their scores into most colleges, while SAT took more like 10-14 days. And then some schools get them updated into the system within hours while others can take 2-3 days. For one college my daughter applied to, they failed to get them updated for almost two months. The only safe approach is to try to get everything in as early as possible and then follow-up as need be.

In the end, hopefully it will all work out…

OP, I hope you received USC confirmation. DD submitted her application on 11/18 and received an email on 11/21 with portal sign on information.

Has anyone uploaded a resume? If so, how did you do it? DD was trying to upload her resume through portal. She clicked “additional information” and uploaded her resume file. But as she was verifying her upload, she accidentally closed the window. So she doesn’t know if it was uploaded successfully. We will wait until Monday to see if she gets a confirmation email, if not, she might just upload it again. I hope this does not annoy AO if it’s a duplicate.

@4beardolls

My daughter submitted her Resume per the USC Admissions email for such… admscan@usc.edu

The sender should include the applicant’s full name, date of birth, common application ID # and/or USC ID #. Anything sent to that email address will be scanned and then attached to the applicant’s file.

Hi the portal does show my D’s app status now and looks like everything has been received.
