There are a lot of posts related to submitting/not submitting SAT and ACT test scores, but I am not finding much about submitting AP scores. My daughter has taken a few AP exams so far and received a 2, a 3 and a 4. She does not feel she will do any better this year with virtual school and a modified curriculum which has left her learning several concepts on her own. She will not be applying to T20 school but is interested in several T30-T60 schools. Will not reporting AP scores hurt her? How much are these scores considered in the admission process? Is it better to include certain scores and omit the others or better to leave them all off? Her grades are very good, but anxiety kicks in when she takes the exams. We have not yet decided if she will submit ACT scores - it will likely vary by school depending on where those fall compared to the 50% range. Any insight on submitting AP exam scores would be appreciated!
In general AP scores are not factored in at all in the admissions process, but rather only for, as their name suggests, advanced placement into higher level courses.
If one is applying to those impossible schools that are reaches for everyone and one has a mix of 4s and 5s for Ap scores, is the consensus then not to submit scores?
The guidance our CC gave was to self-report 4s and 5s. They confirm grades/mastery and in that way enhance the app. The corollary is to not report anything lower.
If you search this site, there’s a lot of concern about what AOs will think about the “,missing” scores. The consensus is that they won’t think about them - there are kids who don’t take the exams.
4s and 5s are fine. As noted, APs have little role in admissions decisions.
I don’t agree that APs play little role in college admissions. It depends on the colleges. At least at some colleges, for students who took AP exams and submitted their scores, these scores can be more important than their SAT/ACT scores.
For colleges like Brown, CWRU, CMU, Vandy, Rice etc should one submits 4s on Ap exams?
There are always school-specific exceptions. But the latest NACAC survey says AP scores are very important to 5.5% of college counselors, 12th in order of importance.
My sample size is only a couple dozen but, outside of homeschooled students, I haven’t had any AOs express that AP scores are important. Two have told be they don’t even receive AP scores. (“We use them for placement after admission. It’s literally in the name.”)
I would self report those 4s.
