Submitting Apps Way Ahead in Advance??

Hey guys, my parents seem to think that I need to write all my college essays and submit them really soon because that will give me an advantage. The issue is that although I have all my test scores and stuff to do that, I am applying to like 13 schools so if I rush-write my essays I think that will be bad. Also, I always thought most people just turned them in whenever and still got in, and I thought people spent months fixing their essays. Any advice?

Sending your application in early will NOT give you an advantage, unless it is a rolling admissions school. Otherwise, they will only read them when everyone else’s is in, by the November 1st or the January 1st deadline. Don’t rush write your essays. Take the time to do it, edit, and revise them. Given the fact that most people will have it polished and fine tuned when they send it in, doing a rushed job will make it seem like you don’t care about the school, which I am sure is not the case.

Also, I know this wasn’t part of the question, but consider fine tuning or cutting your list down a bit. As a person who applied to 10 schools where more than half of them had essays, it was a somewhat stressful experience, and wish I spent more time on each one. Quality over quantity.

Good luck!

shawnspencer is absolutely right. Unless the school offers rolling admissions, there is no advantage to getting your app in early.

Yes, do your essays early. However, after you finish them, take a break for a week or so, and then go back, revise, and edit. Repeat the process. Make sure the supplemental essays demonstrate knowledge about that particular college. Proofread; do not rely on spellcheck. If you are lucky enough to have an English teacher, or someone with a strong writing ability, agree to read your essays, take advantage of it.
