You send Penn's Form 6 through the mail. You send your parent's 1040 (well at least I did, others may have not) and/or W-2s (I didn't send these) through the mail. And you complete the CollegeBoards Profile through the site. Fill out the Fafsa starting Jan 1.

send 2004 tax return with Form 6 in January?? Coz 2005 one isnt out yet....we have to use info on 2004 form rite????????

Yes, you have to copy all of your 2004 W2's and schedules.

I don't think that you have to send in your 2004's unless you or your parents own a business. Otherwise, just send in Form 6, BUT I sent in my 2004 forms anyway because there're so many conflicting answers to that question.

"WHOA, WHOA

May I direct all RD people applying for fin aid to look at the form right now.

All those questions with little stars in circles? Um, why are they next to certain questions?
And WHY, at the end of the fin aid form, is there a little star in a circle that says 'For SFS Use'

Does that mean we werent supposed to fill in those questions? Are they hieroglyphics? YO NO COMPRENDE!"

WHAT. DO. THE. STARS. MEAN.!?

I'm not sure what the deal is with the "SFS use" stars, either, but I think I'm still going to enter the data on those lines. Maybe that's not the right thing to do, but I don't really care. I'm much more concerned with my actual application than the financial aid crap. Heck, I'll still go if they invent additional fees just for me.

On the same form:

"Name of Institution to be attended 2006-07" = Penn or blank? I'd really like to put down Penn...

somethingsmellsfunny: you leave that blank...just check the "college" box

Eckie: im thinking the starred questions are the ones that "require" an answer. for the ones that dont apply, i'm just putting in $0 for the starred questions, and for the ones that dont apply with no stars, im just leaving blank.

I'm crappy with this stuff and my parents dont speak English. Uh, How do you find the answer for number 12 about taxes paid in 2004? I cant find it on the 1040

BTW, how are you supposed to fill out the financial info for 2005 (which none of us have yet ) and 2006 (wth??)

should i put my earnings pre tax or after tax?

munkeegirl: for taxes, it only asks for 2004...for questions 10 and 11, just ask your parents to try and remember the amount or estimate close to the amount in 2005, and for 2006, just put an estimate. Also, i dont think it asks for the earnings, but the actual amount of taxes themselves

actually it asks for student earnings on question 5.

i would put earnings after tax then

I can't seem to find it anywhere so.. when are all the financial aid papers for RD applicants due?

Form 6 is supposed to be postmarked by January 1st.

oh god.. just finished the darn financial aid form. had to rush my dad. ugh.. I thought I saw somewhere that they weren't due till Feb 1st. Guess not..

For 12: "state and local income tax":
I'm looking at their W-2 Wage and Tax statement and there's a "State income tax". Should I just add my mother's and father's together? or is there more?

line 37 I see "amount from line 36 (adjusted gross income)" But on line 39, it says "Itemized deductions (from schedule A) or your standard deduction(see left margin)" = 9,700 (because they're married filing jointly). So should Total itemized deductions just be zero since 9,700 is from standard deduction?

They asked for student earnings. I did an internship over the summer and havent filed taxes yet. Would it be before or after taxes then?

Also they ask for taxable income received from social security..I didn't see anything on the 1040, but when I checked the w-2 wage and tax statement, there's a "social security tips", "social security wages", and a "social security tax withheld". That wouldnt happen to have to do with taxable income received from social security, would it?

Thank you very much for the help!

zomg, someone pleeeaase respond

Are the post offices even open on January 1st? I'm freaking out now cause I had no idea we were supposed to send anything so soon... I thought it was all in February!!

no. post offices arent opened jan 1st. today is the last day before the new year. But dont worry about it, sending it on Jan 3rd wont be that bad.

Yea.. don't worry. Usually they give allow you an extra day or two with supplemental things like financial aid.
