<p>Submitting a portfolio by itself will not help. Submitting an outstanding portfolio may help, but admission for international students is very competitive at MIT, so it's certainly no guarantee.</p>
<p>My son, now a freshman, submitted two music CD's: one with two bassoon pieces, and one with two piano pieces. While preparing the submission, he was in contact with a couple of music professors who answered various questions; he thought this allowed for some contact outside the usual admissions process although he had no idea if the professors actually were in contact with any Adcoms about him. Supplemental submissions, while unneccessary, probably do help, as they are an additional demonstration of extracurricular interest and passion - though musicians in particular are ubiquitous at MIT (it's been said in the past that half of the students minor in Music).</p>
