if i take out a subsidized stafford loan....do i have to wait until 6 months after graduation before i can pay the loan

i want to repay the loan during the school year....so that i wont have to pay interest or anything after graduation, but i cant find any website that answers this question....each website says "repayment begins 6 months after graduation"

Repayment becomes MANDATORY 6 months after graduation (or separation of full-time student status), unless waived due to hardship (disabled or??) HOWEVER, you MAY begin repayment immediately upon release of any payment to you.

Not sure why you would want to do that though, since the interest charges are absorbed by the federal government (free money) until that repayment begins.

Good for you, kb. Mom is correct, but you can work the principal down while in school so that when you get out, there will be less to worry about. New rules for Staffords come out in July but there may be detailed information somewhere, someplace.

I will say this...IF the Stafford subsidized loan is the ONLY loan you have, I wholeheartedly agree with paying it down while in school. However if there is other debt amassing, it's not the one I'd be nicking away at.

Regardless, good for you in being fiscally aware. THAT'S a great trait!
