Hello! I need to fill out my housing form for Colby College, but I'm struggling so much to decide whether or not I want regular housing or substance free housing. I'm not against partying and I imagine I will go to parties, but I don't want to party all the time and it sometimes bothers me when people do. I absolutely cannot deal with people throwing up (which is my main reason for wanting substance free housing) and I don't want a crazy roommate. But I also don't want to be isolated or unable to go to parties. Like, would I be able to still go to parties if I'm in substance free? Apparently every freshman is going to be in an all freshman dorm, so that doesn't affect my decision, but I just don't know what to do. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Substance free housing is for people who will not go to parties or drink whatsoever. If you’re going to drink, it’s a good idea not to do substance free. Plus I’m sure the dorm is more strict

You’d be able to go to parties. You just won’t be able to throw them, and there probably won’t be many (or any, depending on how well students follow the rules) in your dorm. They can’t stop you from going wherever you want or doing whatever you want while you’re there.

I’d say go for non-substance-free if you want to party… different schools will have different rules, but you might have a harder time finding people to go out with if you’re in that one, and your roommate probably won’t be happy if you come home drunk.

I wouldn’t expect a normal dorm to be constant parties, btw. People will dress up and go out on weekends, but I’d expect it to be out, not in the dorms. But there’s probably not a huge difference between the dorm options anyways.

Thank you all for your responses! My parents are making me do substance free housing, even though I’ve tried to make them see my side of the situation. They said if I do regular housing they won’t pay for my college (which I think is an empty threat, but I also really don’t want to find out). I’m incredibly unhappy with them, but if anyone who has been in substance free housing could tell me what it was like for them, that would be amazing.

Substance free housing or no substance free housing probably won’t make much of a difference and really isn’t worth picking a fight over. College kids are still college kids, no matter what label gets put on them. Keep an open mind and seek out experiences that you want to participate in. There will always be parties, there will always be opportunities to try new things, and there will always be fun things to do. If you find that you don’t like your housing situation, just go out, meet new people, see new things. Your housing situation has much less to do with whether or not you have a good experience than you do.
