Substance free?

Current students:

I don't really know very much about the substance-free dorms at Dartmouth. How common is it to live in these dorms? What are the benefits/drawbacks?
Do you live in one?

Right now, I don't have a strong preference either way, but I just wanted to get some more information about it.

Thanks!

you're not a drinker?

Substance-Free areas are designated as places free of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. Residents sign a contract agreeing not to use substances while in the community or to cause a disruption while under the influence of substances used elsewhere.

Butterfield and Russell Sage are substance free communities. First-year students are assigned primarily to triple rooms in Russell Sage, which is a mixed class community.

In the Choates (freshmen only housing), Cohen and Little are both substance free.

Drinking still goes on in the substance free dorms. A friend of mine lived in Butterfield (all upper class), who both smokes and drinks. You just have to be a bit quieter about it. The people usually aren't too uptight because a lot of them drink, but got stuck there because of bad room draw numbers. The difference is not pronounced.
Russell Sage is a great location, but the rooms are pretty small.

i may be biased, but my impression is that living is substance free housing is less fun and less exciting--whether you drink or not. i see alot of kids who live in subfree hanging out on my floor. certainly you will find more friends willing to go out and party with you. at the same time, ive rarely had trouble with noisy kids while im trying to sleep, though you might if you go to bed early. whichever way you go, request all-freshman housing. much more cohesive, even if the rooms suck.

I heard they're constructing a new dorm for incoming freshman (CO 2010)... is this true?

Kimfuge... they are constructing a new dorm, up by the Med School, but I don't know if it's for freshman or mixed class.

I requested upper class housing my freshman year because I wanted to be around people who I could ask for advice. And I wanted to be around older boys. ;)

make no mistake, write that you want to be put in all-freshman housing... its further but way more fun. I got stuck in a real ****ty room and really wish I lived in all-freshman. dont get me wrong, I still have a good time and have met tons of people buuuut all-freshman is the way to go for sure.

I sleep like a rock..noisy roommates/floormates is going to be no problem at all.
