Suggest colleges to check out

@I_love_cats, W&M has no scenario for an OOS student that brings the price down anywhere close to a SUNY

The SUNY Universities (Bing, Buffalo, Albany, SB) are about 28,000 per year total cost of attendance. Tuition is just over $7,000.

The smaller SUNY schools come in at a little less- about $25,000 (tuition is just over $7000).

The universities (and smaller colleges like Geneseo) are excellent schools. It’s going to be hard for this particular student to beat the cost.

They could try West Virginia University. It might be approaching affordability with a small student loan. They also have scholarships for OOS students.

Agree it will be hard to match SUNY for price & quality.

See Shepherd University in WV, its history program,President’s scholarship for stats, brings OOS cost to about $24k

Christopher Newport has a couple of scholarships for his stats but exact amounts tbd

Mount St Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD, has $30k Trustees scholarship for his stats, good recruiting for federal jobs, good grad school placement.

The lowest cost we found after merit in the NE was Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia, with higher test scores but lower gpa 3.9).

Lots of these have been mentioned already but just wanted to call attention to them anyway. My D is a current History/IR/Asian Studies major/minor and had criteria similar to yours. Siena has a very good reputation and a few “average excellent” students from our NY HS enroll every year. Also, look at Muhlenberg, Hobart, Wheaton, Ursinus, and Clark in Worcester, MA.

I agree that Union is also worth a look. D didn’t want Greek life but still attends a school with a big Greek presence and has an active social life without participating. Union does not “feel” as Greek as some other schools do.

Wow thank you so much everyone. Those lists and comments are very helpful and very appreciated! Thank you all for taking the time.

I am a SUNY system grad so I definitely have no problem with those schools but want to see if there are other options too. We will be digging into your suggestions immediately so I will post any updates. Thanks again!

Clark, and if you’re willing to venture to the Midwest Knox and Wooster.

@AustenNut gave a pretty comprehensive list! My DC has similar stats. Found great merit McDaniel, Allegheny, Juniata, St. Mary’s (MD), Susquehanna. (No Greek at St. Mary’s or Juniata.) Dickinson gave merit and a nice grant (and is low-key Greek).

Target any school where he is in the top of the applicant pool. If you are a straight-forward married, W-2 family, the NPCs were quiet accurate for us.

A friend, with similar stats to your DC just committed St. Joseph’s in Philly. Kid and parents loved their visits.

Shepherd in WV was mentioned. A few years ago, they had a very, very low graduation rate - like less than 50% (so while your DC will graduate, he may not do it with most of the kids he started with). And it was a lot of transfers. Red flags for me.

I know it’s outside your area, but Beloit is a good choice for merit aid. Also St. Olaf and Hendrix. Conn College I would second. Maybe look at Trinity U in TX.
