Grade: Sophomore

PSAT: 201
Sat II Subject tests: Will take US History, World History and Math II at the end of next year.
Rank: N/A
AP Classes: AP Government (have not recieved AP exam score yet), I'm taking AP US History and AP World History next year in addition to probably 2-3 AP Classes senior year.

EC: JV Football, Marching Band (section leader), SGA VP, Sports Director for school newspaper, NHS, Tri-M (Music version of NHS)

Essay: Will probably be really good since I'm going to get my Journalism teacher to help me who is amazing at writing.

REC's: Amazing, my AP government teacher wrote me a rec for my internship this summer and gave me a copy and my band teacher will probably write the other one (but not sure yet).

Extra Stuff: I'm doing an internship this summer with Congressmen Steny Hoyer and plan on doing one with him the summer between my junior and senior year as well. I also will have 300+ volunteer hours by Senior year (126 from volunteering at a local elementary school teaching kids basic math skills and reading).

I'm interested in politics and will major in political science in college. What schools do you suggest for me and are they a safety/match/reach? Thanks a lot.

If you need anything else just request it.

anyone???

If you keep your GPA up and do well on your SATs, I suggest you apply for Georgetown since it’s in D.C. and you can get a lot of internships there.

Obviously, since it’s Georgetown, it’s a reach.

I don’t know a lot about political science so I don’t really know any “safety” schools.

here’s mine
I don’t know how to make a link haha sorry

If you want to go into politics you should be looking to attend the best school that you can, since name recognition is generally a big thing in politics. Do you know in about what range in rank you are in and how big of a class you are? Those can help a lot in figuring out just where you stand. To get into a really good school you should probably try to raise your GPA a bit, and your PSAT’s are pretty good , but you might wnat to raise it up by the time you take the SATs to balance out a decent, but not amazing GPA. You also might want to add some more EC, since yours are “Oh my God, there amazing!”

A school I have very little doubt you would have a hard time getting into is UMich. It isn’t an Ivy, but is still a pretty well respected school. Unless you can raise you GPA, ivies might be out of reach, but you could have a chance iat the lower tiered ones if you raise your GPA. Northwestern might be another pretty good school you might want to look at. If you perfect the stuff you put on your appplication I have no doubt that you can look at some really good schools.

You are only a Sophmore so a lot can happen in the next year. The good thing is that you are looking early. I think it is hard to exactly suggest places for you since it is early and a lot can change in the next year. Just keep up the hard work and I have no doubt that you will find the school that is perfect for you. Good luck with everything! :)

Here is a link to mine: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/722779-school-suggestions-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Political Science is a pretty straight forward subject. Most good universities have excellent Political Science programs. Here are some good Political Science departments:

Columbia University
Cornell University
Duke University
Harvard University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Princeton University
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles
University of California-San Diego
University of Chicago
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Rochester
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Washington University-St Louis
Yale University

Some excellent departments aren’t really large but still very well respected:
Amherst College
Carleton College
Claremont McKenna
Dartmouth College
Haverford College
Macalester College
Middlebury College
Swarthmore College
Williams College

Please keep in mind that those are just a few of the many good choices. Other universities may not be as strong or as recognized in the field of Political Science, but they will still have excellent offerings.

I think that from this list the ivys are a huge reach for you, although UMich and some of the California ones should be good matches for you.

thanks everyone

The only real problem I see with your app is your GPA, and considering that you are only a sophomore a good junior year and a good first semester in senior year can dramatically increase your GPA. In the case that you had a bad freshmen year, but better sophomore year you should definitely consider schools like Stanford and Princeton as they do not look at freshmen grades. All of the UC’s will be great matches for you as well.

I think you could really apply to any school you wanted, you seem like a solid well rounded candidate, good luck!

Well, first of have you considered going to college abroad? In the UK there are some excellente political science departments, if I were you I would look in to it also, just to know what options are available to you, other that that in the US I would probably recomend Duke or Georgetown, but my knowledge is pretty limited on teh subject your are applying to so I cant give you information aboute safety schools.

we have very similar stats.
i plan on applying to schools like GU, GW, BC, BU, JH.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/georgetown-university/719824-chance-me-i-will-love-you-forever.html</a></p>

I would suggest (aside from the usual keep the GPA up/rising, get good test scores, all that), apply to BU, AU, NYU, Penn State, UT Austin. GU is a reach for anyone, and there’s plenty of places that can offer a great (and enjoyable) undergrad. education. With poli. sci., also consider what you’ll do after graduation-- grad school? internship? paper pusher and rise up by work? law school? All of these things should affect where you attend undergrad. If you plan to pursue higher education afterwards, choose a cheap(er) school and get grad. school assistantships for top schools later.

You’re doing good, and keep working at it. Don’t make yourself miserable over test scores and GPAs-- try to do good, but enjoy high school (and college, etc.). You’ll have plenty of college options. My advice is to look into schools that will be “wow-ed” by you and give you merit scholarships. There’s no need to go under $$ for undergrad. Look at some of the nice state schools that are great about out-of-state merit scholarships. Also, DePauw, Albany, and a load of others might be worth looking into. The internship and so forth is good-- be sure to show your passion in your college applications later on, instead of listing any extracurricular imaginable. Don’t forget to consider study abroad options. It would be awesome to get a full-ride at a top 1-2 tier university and spend a few years studying abroad.

Please chance me (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/718303-transferring-weak-er-gpa-thats-since-risen.html</a>)

BU, NYU, AU, Duke, Harvard, UCs.

thanks everyone for the advice, keep it coming!

bump…

you’re definitely on the right track for politics with the internship & everything.
I think the things you need to work on are getting your unweighted GPA up, doing really well on SATs/ACTs, and getting at least one major leadership position by the end of high school.

Georgetown is a great school for politics but it would probably be a reach and you should also definitely look at UMich which you have a pretty high chance of getting into.

Chance me back?

anyone else?

I think you should look into American University.

Let’s see… Williams looks like a good fit, U of Chicago also, Stanford (maybe a stretch), U of Texas and UNC

…b.u.m.p.
