Hey everyone,

I've finally decided upon Kings Point over West Point for a myriad of different complex reasons. But i'm here to ask, are there any good books that can give a good insight to the life of a merchant mariner? I appreciate any help in advance.

I can't really think of anything modern that would be good, not much is written about modern day sailing that I can think of. "The Last American Sailors" by Micheal Rawlins is a good read, but it tells of life about 15 years ago and a lot has changed. If you want some history you can read "Two Years Before the Mast" by Dana, thats also a good read.

I"m currently reading 'Looking for a Ship' by John McPhee, again it's about 16 years old and I know a lot has changed. Also 'Three Star Fix' by Joseph Jablonski, written to take place in the late 1960s. Last year I read a fairly recent non-fiction book about modern piracy, 'Dangerous Waters: Modern Piracy and Terror on the High Seas' by John Burnett, althouh a lot of that was about foreign-flagged ships, not US-flagged, and it was still very interesting. All of these are available at Amazon and possibly through your local library.

Congrats on your appointment to Kings Point!

thnx k314sig09 and kpmom06, ur suggestions are appreciated. I've had trouble trying to find most of em, but i do find the Dangerous Waters: Modern Piracy and Terror on the High Seas to be a good one.

If theres anybody else out there that could give more suggestions, please do.
