Suggestions for an English major?

What are you thinking of doing? It won't significantly deter your completing your major completion if you defer English Composition 3 until Winter Quarter...

In our departmental advising at orientation, the English counselor said as long as you have 4W done by next summer, you're good to go. Ideally you do stuff early as possible, but apparently you don't need to fret as long as you get the 10 series done in your sophomore year.

i've an english final friday 9/12 6-9pm for eng 10a session c?! i thought finals are only papers, not 3 hour sit downs. is myucla wrong?

Who are you dawritingmachine?!

Ask your instructor... it just depends.

Just a question for future reference, should I use priority pass in the winter for Eng Comp 3?

My guess is yes. You shouldn't need it for GEs, and you can't take major classes until you get your requisites out of the way. And you've seen how EngComp 3 fills up.

woot! some spots opened up for Eng. Comp 3!! :D :D

Congrats! (who called it?) Are you gonna go for it?

yep definitely! :D there were actually several spots open!

to what extent could i rely on sparknotes in the 10 series classes, particularly english 10a? idk how close i should read the text. there is so much! i wonder what the midterm would be like...

right now i am reading enough to write my essay. haha

please give me advice regarding how close i should read and how i could study for the in-class midterm for an 'A' grade.

thanks

Oh my gosh, Sparknotes is SOOOO bad! They come to obvious conclusions, draw dull and unexciting parallels and connections, focus on unimportant themes and moments in the novels they "analyze," and lead many a student to write common essays that are anything but special or insightful. Please don't rely on it - you'll trash your brain and miss out on some good literature!

sparknotes is OK for a crutch as plot summary... but dwm... why bother taking 10a if you're relying on sparknotes? there are other easier classes for ur ge.... or worse, why rely on sparknotes if youre pursuing the english major/minor...?! counterintuitive...

yeah i should take time and enjoy the literature...i love reading about old english knights. :)

This is from my A-levels which got me out of 10A etc. I used York Notes Advanced (google it) and it was brilliant, like far better than sparknotes. I'm not sure if it's widely available in the states but if you can find it it's well worth a purchase. There's another series that's a collection of critical essays that was brill as well, I think it was called touledge or rutledge or sth, but i'll have to check back on that. But yeah, York Notes Advanced are brilliant, insightful criticism, highlights important bits and great for an informative starter.

old knights? god thats disgusting~~ 10a material/norton
