What classes do I take ?!

Before I can answer this, I have to see what you have passed out of already. I highly recommend getting rid of these requirements during your freshman year:

Writing I requirement
Passed out by: 3, 4, or 5 on AP English exams or 680+ on SAT II Writing or passing the Subject A exam

If not, you will have to enroll in the class: ENGLISH COMPOSITION 3

American History requirement
Passed out by: completing a year of US history and/or US govt in high school with an avg grade of B or better OR 500+ on SAT II US History OR 3, 4, or 5 on AP US History

If not, you will have to enroll in one of many options that can satisfy this requirement (you will be given a course catalog at orientation to see which classes can do this)

Quantitative Reasoning Requirement
Passed out by: SAT II Math 550+ or SAT Math 600+

If not, you will have to enroll in one of many options that can satisfy this requirement (you will be given a course catalog at orientation to see which classes can do this)

These are requirements you'll have to get rid of before you graduate [COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE ONLY]:

Foreign Language requirement
Passed out by: 3, 4, or 5 on AP French/German/Spanish or passing out on a foreign language diagnostic exam

If not, you will have to demonstrate foreign language level up to level 3 (probably by taking level 3 class or working your way up to level 3)

Writing II Requirement
Passed out by: None

You will have to enroll in one of several options that can satisfy this requirement (you will be given a course catalog at orientation to see which classes can do this). The Cluster’s spring seminar will also do this

General Education Requirements!
You will have to complete 10 GE requirements as outlined here
GE requirements:
<a href="http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/main.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/main.htm</a></p>

They may be fulfilled through many options as stated here:
Classes to fulfill GE's:
<a href="http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/GE/%5B/url%5D">http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/GE/</a></p>

During your freshman year, you also have the option to fulfill 3 GE requirements (plus the Writing II requirement) through a Cluster program:
Freshman Clusters:
<a href="http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/clusters/%5B/url%5D">http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/clusters/</a></p>

OKAY, so, you can choose classes to fulfill the requirements that you have not fulfilled yet. If you have (or if you want to put them off for now), then you can take classes in your major if they are offered fall quarter or not full yet. I also recommend taking a Fiat Lux seminar or two. They are 1-unit classes where the topics are usually interesting and you have more interaction with the professor.

[If you are looking to start taking classes within your major, please list your major and I will try to recommend some classes that most people with that major start off with]

Thanks for the informative post, kfc4u.

What do people in pre-bizecon usually start out with? There's a whole bunch of prereq courses we have to take before getting enrolled in bizecon...what should I start out with? Also...what classes are good for satisfying the honors requirement?

It's amazing how much time students seem to have....that's good to know for next year. ;)

what classes do i start out taking if i'm a biology major? please recommend moderate classes with cool professors and interesting topics.

"What do people in pre-bizecon usually start out with?"

Econ 1, Econ2, or Math 31A or Math 31B.

"what classes do i start out taking if i'm a biology major?"

Life Science 1, Life Science 2, Chem14A, Math 3A or 3B or maybe even 3C.

i suggest taking a mix of GE's along with 1 or 2 of those classes to start off with so your load is a bit easier.

and unfortunately i can't recommend professors. i'm not in those majors and even so, professors vary by quarter (some dont teach every quarter or they teach different classes during different quarters). however, you can go onto myucla and see which prof is teaching and check out their rating on <a href="http://www.bruinwalk.com%5B/url%5D">www.bruinwalk.com</a> to see if you DONT want to take a certain professor.

If I'm an enginnering major, do I still need to finish the Foreign language requirement?

haha, nvm. Looks like I found it.

<a href="http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/hsseas.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/hsseas.htm</a></p>

^ for engineering majors.

im incoming EE'er, what should i take in my first year?

note: ive already taken calculus I/II at a local community college

Thanks for another great post, KFC4u!

I figured, as I was unable to take AP US History at my school, that I'd have to take a class like that again in college. But since I got A's, I guess I don't have to!:)

I'm not looking forward to fulfilling the Foreign Language requirement, as I only took two years of Spanish at the beginning of high school and I might have to start over:(

Also, don't forget that it's possible to fulfill some if not all of these requirements by taking classes at a community college. This includes (according to assist.org) the Writing II requirement.

Thank you so much kfc4u! you really devote a lot of your time to help us "newbees" :). I have a question about unassigned AP credit. you said,

" Writing I requirement
Passed out by: 3, 4, or 5 on AP English exams or 680+ on SAT II Writing or passing the Subject A exam

If not, you will have to enroll in the class: ENGLISH COMPOSITION 3"

But the website <a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/APCreditEN.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/APCreditEN.htm</a> tells me that if i received a 3 on either the AP English language or Literature exam, i would satisfy the Subject A requirement, but the credit that i would receive would be "unassigned". Does this mean that i still will have to enroll in English composition 3? or is this unassigned credit like "elective credit" that will just help me to graduate more quickly(i've got a lot of "elective credit" so far). Any response from anybody would be just dandy :).

waitingpatiently, I'm not sure about the AP Lit exam but, I know from experience that if you get a 3 on the AP Lang exam that you WILL have to enroll in English Comp 3. The credit that they assign just says that you do not need to take the placement exam and that you can go directly into English Comp 3.

yeah, that's what i thought. But i had to be sure. For literature, it says the same thing on the website. Thank You for clarifying :)

OH i forgot to mention. waitingpatiently, you can only pass out of Writing I with 4 or 5 on AP english (either one) or 720+ on sat II writing. so even though subject A is satisfied, you'll still need to take English Comp 3 like ckings86 mentioned. however, you still do get elective credit from passing the AP test. basically, unassigned = elective.

i messed up. it's supposed to read like this:

Subject A requirement:
Passed out by: 3, 4, or 5 on AP English exams or 680+ on SAT II Writing or passing the Subject A exam

If not, you will have to enroll in the class: ENGLISH COMPOSITION A or ENGLISH COMPOSITION 2

Writing I requirement
Passed out by: 4 or 5 on AP English exams or 720+ on SAT II writing

If not, you will have to enroll in the class: ENGLISH COMPOSITION 3

sorry for the confusion.

Writing I requirement
Passed out by: 4 or 5 on AP English exams or 720+ on SAT II writing

If not, you will have to enroll in the class: ENGLISH COMPOSITION 3

sorry for the confusion.

kfc, it's only one or the other right? like if you hvae the necessary SAT score, you don't need the AP score yeah?

Though I'm an English major and have placed out of the English Composition 3 requirement, I'm a little wary about 'skipping ahead.' I'd hate to get into a situation where I discover that they're expecting me to know something I don't and that my style is completely "wrong." Does Comp3 just cover the basics we already know from high school and I need not worry, or what?

yea pixiedanzer.

laurak,
i've heard english comp 3 is basically busy work but i've never taken it so i wouldn't know. just a thought though, i think if you're an english major, you'll encounter multiple writing styles and expectations anyway... i don't know if english comp 3 will prep you for that though.

Thanks kfc, all I needed to know :)

i got a 5 on my AP Calc AB exam. does that mean i can go straight into Math 31A, or so i still need to take the placement test?

also, i'm looking at the requirements for my major (biochem). i assume courses with an "L" behind them are labs? does that mean i have to take them the same quarter as the part without the "L"? ie: do i have to take Chem 20L at the same time as Chem 20A and/or Chem 20B?
