UNC’s supplement essays has a prompt like this: “Tell us about a peer who has made a difference in your life.”
I’m not really sure what’s the focus of this essay, like, how to deal with “peer’s part” and “influence on me” part. I head someone say write about a challenge or something in which your peer helped, but that would sound a lot like cheating…
What do you think are viable examples? Thanks a lot!
Remember, the point of the essay is to get to know YOU, to give them a reason to say yes to YOUR application.
So a little about your friend, and a lot about how you’ve grown.
Try looking at the essay process backwards. First think about what you want admissions to know about you, then think about how to show them that quality, then figure out how to connect that to a peer.
Here’s an essay example that my D thought of. She didn’t end up writing about this but thought about it as a possible topic.
When she was in middle school all the girls were wearing Ugg’s and hollister, Aeropostale etc. They all wanted to blend in. A new student cane to school wearing combat boots, dyed hair, etc. My D saw her standing by herself and invited her to eat lunch with her group.
This was going to evolve into how my D is open and accepting and seeks out different types of friends.
So although it would have been about her friend, it was ultimately about my D.
