Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for good writing schools. I'm planning to major in English with emphasis on creative writing. Bonus if it's also good for film production (as my bf is majoring in that) - and spring admission, though that is not a must.

I have Columbia U and NYU in mind already, but I would love to expand that very meager list, just in case both fall through and I end up stranded =)

Can you give us your stats so we get an idea as to what level of school we should suggest? Also, there are plenty of schools with great English departments; what else are you looking for in a college?

my high school doesn't rank nor do I have a GPA (I took cambridge A levels)

Activities (i'll throw in everything i think is relevant):

newsletter editor-in-chief
freelanced for a newspaper
awards for table tennis competitions since grade 3
Choir - went for competitions, will have a paid job this december
participated in Youth Exchange to Japan for a month
ABRSM Grade 8 piano?

my list now consists of:

Columbia U
NYU
Brown U
Cornell U
University of Iowa - does anyone have any info on the cinema program?
Wesleyan
Middlebury
Oberlin
Claremont McKenna
Pomona
Emerson

and for the not as highly-ranked ones:

Boston C and U
Hampshire
Syracuse

I don't know how tough it is to get in to those schools, but I was accepted into USC prior to this (didn't go for personal reasons) so perhaps that can be a yardstick?

It's a bit tough because I want a university with a great English/creative writing program and an equally great Film program.

I also have another question. How do you guys find out if a school is for you? I mean, i'm an international student so i can't go on visits - a website can only tell you so much (and if the site isn't well made, I immediately get put off by the first impression). I don't even know if their English/film department is prestigious, so i rely on universal rankings which isn't a very good indicator?

Another problem is when i have to tell them "why did i choose so-and-so university" as i don't know the perks of the school and environment and people there except from what i can glean through the net. I'm more stumped on those questions than on the personal essay!

If I were an intel, I would go on Amazon.com and order the 35th edition of "The Insider's Guide to the Colleges". It has just been published and is compiled and edited by the staff of the Yale Daily News. It's about as concise a collection of campus descriptions, complete with positives and negatives, as you're going to get for the next year or two. The most egregious error I've spotted is that it gives Middlebury's admittance rate as 42% -- I think it's half that --(my other pet peeve is that the Yalies give WAY too much emphasis to Wesleyan's supposed "Naked Dorm" which is an old canard from ten years ago.) Otherwise, it seems pretty up to date. :p
