Hiya. I'm a freshman looking for a summer internship, but I'm finding the search a little overwhelming and confusing. I want to intern somewhere in Europe.

Some websites seem to confuse interning with study abroad, which appears to mean that you "intern", but you also pay for classes. I'm already planning to study abroad later in college, so I'm not interested in this.

I'm especially interested in working with children as a summer camp counselor: English language or French. (I also speak Japanese). I would strongly prefer to get room and board with work, or some kind of stipend to help with plane tickets and living costs. I'm not set on making a profit from this, although of course that would be nice.

Does anyone have any suggestions for websites I can start with?

My son finished a summer intensive language program in Germany (after passing 3rd year German), and then a semester at a German university taking economic and history classes in German. While he was attending the German university he applied and interviewed for many internships. He actually had choices because he could start the internship the minute the school term ended (since he was already in Germany). He did, however, have to leave the student housing and rent a room in the city where the job was.

As a result he needed to obtain a required work permit, health insurance, and a German bank account. Plus have cash for a security deposit on the room rental. It was easier to do all of this while going to school and thus preparing for the start of his internship.

His school ran from October to March. And the internship started in March going through to August.

Language professors and study abroad staff at your university should be able to give you lots of ideas. Good Luck!
