Hello College Confidential Community. I am currently looking to find schools that are academically on par with William and Mary and have a similar number of undergraduates(around 6,000). Desire to Transfer for the Fall of 2013.

Requirements:
Good Political Science/International Relation Department
Rigorous Academics on par with W&M or even a bit below
Location: East Coast, a nice town is enough activities accessible to college students and urban areas are fine as well.
Finances: Decent financial aid packages for transfers( I only plan on apply to one or two more schools besides W&M but will remain at my current school if finances do not work out).
Smallish Tight Knit Community(Open to LACs)
Athletics are not very important to me
Prefer Schools that do not require SAT scores for Transfers(only got an 1200/1600).

College Stats:
3.75 GPA(30 credits) waiting for final grades to come out this semester estimating around a 3.78-3.82(Will have 47 total credits). At the end of this full year should have 63 credits which will not require me to submit my SAT scores to most schools besides extremely selective privates. I am currently a Sophomore at a Top 20 Public University.

ECs:
Red Cross Club
Model United Nations Director
International Relations Club
Law Society
Inter varsity member
Hospital Volunteer
Saxophonist Symphonic Band
Alternative Spring Break Trip to Tampa is Spring to build Houses
Golden Key nominee(Top 15% of Class)
Alpha Lamba Delta(Freshman year honors society)
Honors program (will be in it at the end of this semester)

Currently have recommendations lined up and essays almost completed.

Going by the title alone, Wake Forest popped into mind - and then when you said “no test scores required” it reinforced my idea. I honestly think Wake Forest is about as close as you’ll come, although it’s a bit smaller than W&M: nice town, East coast location, selective, and test-optional.

If you’re curious, here is the official list of test-optional schools. Providence College, which is also test-optional, is also moderately similar in environment, location, etc., although slightly less selective than W&M. Holy Cross is also test-optional and pretty similar, although it is smaller (about 3,000).

Outside of test-optional schools, other schools similar to W&M that you might want to take a look at (in my opinion) could be Emory University, Colgate University, University of Richmond, and Davidson College.

I’d take a look at Wake Forest. I was between Wake and W&M for transferring into last year, was accepted into both and chose Wake. They’re quite similar, and their test optional policy would probably work in your favor.

Thank you so much for everyone who has responded!!! It is actually really funny because Wake Forest is one of the schools that was on my initial which I have almost completed an application for but I was having some last minute doubts in myself that I wont get into any of these schools or receive enough money and credit transfers to allow me to attend. Then I realized that there is no harm in at least trying since I believe my stats are at least somewhat in the range and competitive.

I was also looking into Emory which by chance doesn’t require the SAT for the amount of credits I will have but my parents said that would be too far since I am in NJ(they said Wake Forest/NC is about my limit).

I was also looking into Holy Cross which looks really nice for what I want but I have a strong desire to get out of New England into someplace warmer haha.

I was also looking to Richmond which looks absolutely gorgeous but my parents think it is a no name school and wouldn’t let me apply.

Lastly, Colgate was at the top of list alongside William and Mary except the thing that made me most nervous was they stated that their funds for transfers was extremely limited. I would love to attend Colgate even if it is colder because it is an excellent school. The SAT requirement for transfers also scared me away because even with my college grades an 1800 is well below the standards of Colgate and I feel like that in itself would kill my chances.

Invader71: Jufst remind your parents that out in the West, the only school anyone’s likely to have heard of is Colgate, and that’s only because they (hopefully) brush their teeth.

If your parents want you to go to a well known school, apply to The College of New Jersey. Everyone, regardless of what part of the country they’re from will know what that is.

Haha for the most part my parents actually seem to know a lot of smaller colleges because I have a good amount of friends at top LACs like Amherst, Williams, and Vassar.

They know and think highly of W&M, Wake Forest, Colgate, and Emory.

TCNJ would be nice but I definitely like being out of state! Plus you never know, some people in New Jersey have never heard of TCNJ lol I also go to UCONN and have friends you have said when they tell people that they go there people say “That is in Alaska right?”

I realize the average person on the street will not recognize schools unless they have major sports teams but all that matters to me is that employers will recognize the name and academic reputation.

“I was also looking to Richmond which looks absolutely gorgeous but my parents think it is a no name school and wouldn’t let me apply.”

UR is not a no name school (Top 30 LAC and rising with very supprotinve alumni network and decent name recognition in mid atlantic and nyc) and fits what you are looking for to the tee.
