Thanks so much! I am thankful that he has options! We are waiting to hear from usc, NYU, Peabody and see if there will be any offers for scholarships!
Appreciate your input!
joeycorp Berklee used to have a high dropout rate because so many students had the talent to make it without finishing. It was considered a negative to graduate: it means you couldnāt make it. I think your info may be dated because in this day and age it really isnāt true.
Iām a bit surprised no one has mentioned Luther College (Decorah, IA) on this thread yet. I have a BA in music (emphasis on viola performance) from there, and (from personal experience) they have an incredible music program. I also know quite a few people who paired a music major with another major (or two majors!).
I am happy to answer Vassar questions. Vassar was perfect for S1 and S2 - with music/science double majors. Lots of opportunities at a high musical level there!
I am also enthusiastic about Vassar due to my firstbornās experience. A vibrant theater community there as well.
She loved Vassar. Wesleyan and Vassar are neck and neck for her first choice. Sheāll likely do an overnight at each next fall and then weāll consider applying early. The FA thing is scary - not knowing what weāll get - but more and more it seems like you double your acceptance chances if you apply early.
I have a rising HS juniorāplanning to major in music performance (clarinet). Trying to get a jump start on the process as I know Iāll only feel more overwhelmed with each passing day! Lol! She is active in music at school, music festivals (Districts-States), youth symphony, etc. Will be attending the Clarinet Institute at Interlochen this summer. Still not sure how sheāll stack up when the time comes, but would like to have a range of possibilities when the time comes. Need some help from the clarinet folks out there. What should be on our list? Beginning to plan visits, lessons, etc. TIA!
I am very new to this; my older son was a more straight forward application process. My younger son is a sophomore but is heavily involved in music and I believe would like to double major or minor in it. He is a percussionist and probably wants to continue to learn and play throughout college. He wants to study political science (as of now) so I am looking for programs in the northeast mainly where he can continue to take lessons and play while studying political science as well. I am confused about the choicesā¦are some programs more performance based and some more music ed based? Again this is very new to me. Also while I said northeast, I was looking at Vanderbiltās website and they mention double major. I am surprised it wasnāt mentioned on the parts of the thread I read here. I am looking early because for percussion there are so many instruments within that you need to audition with he would need to prepare all next year. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
Bard College and Conservatory has a fantastic percussion program run by So Percussion. Bard requires all conservatory students to study for two separate degrees - one in the conservatory, and one in the college. Itās a five year program and there is both merit and need aid support for the entire program. The Political Science department is exceptional, as well. http://www.bard.edu/conservatory/undergraduate/percussion/
goteam2 I sent you a private message. Also, you might want to read the Double Degree Dilemma essay posted closer to the top of this forum. It discusses the various ways to study music and it not only about double degrees.
Hi, i added this as a separate thread but i want to make sure everyone sees it/ please comment on the āUniversity admissions for music majorsā thread.
Hello, i thought i would start a thread with information the admissions process when the music school is part of a larger university. I know that
- University of Michigan screens the applicantsā academics before inviting students to the audition. If you get past the pre-screen, that means the university will not have any objection if the music faculty accepts you following the life audition.
- Rice seems to depend solely on whether the music faculty wants you or not.
- Boston University has been very clear that someone could play an amazing audition, be loved by the music faculty, and still get rejected by the University.
Can anyone corroborate the above? And please add your own knowledge of schools like Northwestern, Oberlin, USC, Ithaca, NYU, Miami, and the other usual suspects. Thanks!
Hi, my son is applying to Rice and his cello teacher knows the cello professor my son wants to learn from. When my sonās cello teacher told that professor that my son wants to apply to Rice, first thing he asked was if my son has strong academics. I guess Rice is also very much like Boston University.
@chollist : From what Iāve seen of Rice admissions and kids that have gone there in the past, it is a harder school to get into academically than BU. Itās much more like Duke, or GATech.
Thank you for your info. Thankfully he has been invited to live audition at Rice so at least he can try. ?
@chollist : congratulation on the audition invite at Rice. Itās an excellent school (but weather can be hot and humid).
Thank you for your kind words. I hope he does well.?
When we spoke with the Rice/Shepherd admissions person, she said that they clear applicants by the admissions office before they send an invite to audition. So if he got an audition invite, chances are high that he will pass academic standards. My daughter attends Rice (as a non-music major) and the school is very academically challenging. Not for the feint of .
Sorry that I just read your comment. Your comment is very encouraging. Thank you! We just got back from USC audition and we have a Rice audition next week. Hope things go wellā¦
@chollist we just had our Rice audition on Friday. The weather was lovely. They have nice practice rooms so go a bit early as they are on a different floor from where the auditions are held. They charge for parking so be ready for that too. My D is a French Horn, so brass is a bit different but we were also able to sit in on the orchestra and I highly encourage thatā¦ it was at 2 on Fridaysā¦it gives you a great idea of the high level of these musicians. They also have toursā¦ we went last year when D had a lesson with the professor so we skipped it this time. Good luck!!
@mperrine, thank you for your valuable info. My Sās audition is at 10:36 am so I guess we should be there pretty early to warm up. Since our return flight is like 7:30 pm, we will try to participate at whatever the options are given. We will be commuting via Lyft or Uber.(I have no gut to drive in a big city like Houston!)
By the way, I met a clarinetist at USC audition and he said among like 150 students who applied for prescreening, only 7 has been selected for live audition so that scared us a lot! Rice is one of the school my S really wants to attend but it seems that competition is really high. ?
