First off - I apologize. I am sure there are numerous posts regarding how to maximize a day visiting Tulane. My son was not able to attend Top Scholars Weekend so we are doing a Destination Tulane day this week. Are there things he will miss that we should know about? We only have a few hours after the day at campus. Any suggestions on how to get the most out of our additional time? Thanks.

Since he is in the Honors Program he still has the privilege of registering for his classes. So I would call the Honors Program office and arrange a time with an advisor that doesn’t conflict with the rest of the program and get that done. That’s probably the best. Since he also missed getting to talk to profs, if there is any particular major he is considering and he wants to talk to a faculty member about it, you can ask the HP office about that at the same time you are getting his class registration squared away. FYI, in case you didn’t know this, registering for classes now in no way commits him to Tulane. It is a perk for Honors students that they get early choices in case they do decide on Tulane.

Thank you for the heads up regarding registering for classes. He has spoken with a faculty member of the biomedical engineering dept and will meet with him on Tuesday. I am really looking forward to Tuesday. He has narrowed his choices down to three schools and the three are all quite different from each other. Tulane is his last school to visit. What an exciting time for him.

That’s great that he had already set up a time to meet with a faculty member. I always encourage that when it is possible. That and the advising/registration session should pretty much eat up any extra time you have, since you said it was only a few hours. If you still end up with a couple hours to kill, I would recommend either he sit in on a class, or that you head a short distance off campus and grab a bite to eat at the Camellia Grill. Anyone can tell you how to get there, it is right up St. Charles.

@6kids2boxers1cat - I was just wondering if he got registered for classes, especially now that he is an official Tulanian. Obviously the visit went well, maybe you could provide some details of the day, including his meeting with the prof.

It was a very cold day in New Orleans…overcast, windy and 44 degrees! Even though the warm climate is a plus as we hail from Michigan, I think a bad weather day helped him focus more on the merits of Tulane rather than escaping Michigan winters. What sealed the deal for him was his visit with the BME department. He was very impressed with the department and their commitment to student research. We were very appreciative of how accommodating every one was and particularly Dr. Gilbertson. He spent quite a bit of time with my son. It was obvious after talking with him that the Tulane BME department is very committed to the success of their students.

As you know I am always touting this aspect of Tulane. Thanks for providing continuing confirmation. I can say with confidence this is true throughout Tulane. It really is in the DNA of the school.

Research for undergraduate is available at Tulane especially if you have good GPA. My Son is doing research now and it is offered/recommended by his physics professor who likes his work. That professor has recommended his name for research headed by different professor.

@Kidsarefun - That is great about your son having so much success at Tulane. I can say with certainty that undergraduate research at a high level has been a hallmark of Tulane for at least a half century. No doubt longer, but that’s the time frame I know for sure.
