destination Tulane vs. summer orientation

S will definitely be attending in the fall - and i am trying to figure out what trips are to be made down there. He has already visited campus (before applying), but I have not. Are the Destination Tulane weekends in early spring designed for students that are still deciding? or does it make more sense to just wait until the summer orientation programs in June? I know that they only stay in the dorms at the orientation programs - so maybe that makes more sense to attend - any thoughts?

We didn’t do either with DD. She had her housing assignment, and she registered online. We just arrived a day early to survey the area and visit buildings where her classes were to be held. (Note: It’s pretty warm and humid in June!)

You have it right 3bysmom. Destination Tulane is for accepted students still deciding. So since your S will definitely be going (congrats again, btw), orientation makes more sense. It will be a lot warmer, but that’s the way it goes. They do spend one night in the dorm that weekend. It was Butler last year. Plus at orientation they can deal with issues such as class advising and registration, if needed. Also since all the kids there are definitely attending, he might meet a potential roommate.

Have fun!

I would say if your son has already visited campus it would make more sense to wait until Orientation. We were faced with the same decision. I grew up in NO (although I haven’t lived there in years and kids haven’t been raised there) so I am very familiar with the city and my daughter has already made two campus visits. The timing and $$ of trying to get her down for a Destination Tulane weekend was going to be very difficult, so thanks to fallenchemist’s advice, we decided to just wait until Orientation. The Destination Tulane event sounds a lot like their Campus Preview events (which we did). Only difference is you get to see a dorm room and can sit in on some classes if you want to. My daughter actually sat in on classes on a regular visit to campus. I have spoken with friends whose children had been admitted and but never had visited campus, so they did the Destination trip. It was very helpful for them since they had never been. But, they also said that orientation was great too and their son actually found his roomate then.

And, I might add, it is very warm and humid in August, too! Might as well get a taste of what they’re going to be living in for the next four years. Trust me, though, it is all worth it come December, January and February!

I should have mentioned that there are a lot of good sessions for the parents during Orientation also. They repeat some of them during move-in weekend I think, but usually there is a lot else going on, so hearing it a couple months before can be useful. Not absolutely needed, as demonstrated by NewHope, but since you haven’t seen the campus yet anyway, it is a good time to do it all.

Are the dates for destination weekend posted on the Tulane website? I’ve already managed to misplace the sheet with all the information.

Thanks for all the thoughts - looks like we will save our trip for orientation in June. By the way future Tulane parents - I just noticed that they have posted the dates for parents weekend 2010 - October 8-10. Make your hotel reservs now!

[Tulane Admission: Visit Campus](http://admission.tulane.edu/visit/index.php)

Look at the last thing on the page.

There is another link that talks about dates ([Tulane Admission: Destination Tulane- for Admitted Students](http://admission.tulane.edu/livecontent/events/221-destination-tulane-for-admitted-students.html)) but I think this is an older page that has not been corrected because the dates given here run right over the Spring Break, which is very late for Tulane because of Mardi Gras break.

That is an older link because there are only two Saturdays this year for Destination Tulane, and they are April 10th and April 17th.

um no, we have signed up for and been confirmed for march 22 destination tulane

This is just a quick message to confirm your reservation to attend Destination Tulane at Tulane University in New Orleans.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday, March 22. Click here to return to your confirmation page, where you may access directions and hotel or airline information.

Not sure what you mean by the “um no”, 3bysmom.

Didn’t mean for that to come out the way it did! Sorry!

I apologize 3bysmom. I wasn’t clear about what I was trying to say. I didn’t mean that there were only two dates period…just that there were only 2 Saturdays and the Saturday dates on that link were not the Saturdays for this year but were from last year. I wasn’t suggesting that there weren’t any other Destination Tulane dates. If you look on the link listed, one of the dates that it lists is Saturday, April 4th. That was last year. April 4, 2010 is a Sunday.

Didn’t mean to worry you.

cmb - absolutely no reason to apologize. I was doing things in my typical (too fast!) manner and came across snarky! Anyway, we will be taking a pass on the destination tulane dates (whenever they are!) and attending the orientation in June. I don’t think you can sign up for those until end of Feb though…

Well, I wrote to admissions to tell them about the bad info, but it is still there. They are probably so overwhelmed still that I guess it is hard to get to it. If I knew who was responsible for the web pages I would just write them directly.

I think that you are right about signing up for Orientation weekend. We need to try and sign up as soon as we can because from what I understand, they fill up pretty quickly and we are limited as to which dates she can do.

I think you are wise to pass on the Destination Tulane (as long as your son has already made his decision) and go to Orientation. That’s what we’re doing, too.

Good luck!

I dunno, people. Any excuse to get to New Orleans! Kidding (sort of). I think you are right that if decision is made, Orientation is the only thing that makes sense, for reasons previously stated. Only down side is weather in early-mid April is usually gorgeous, and June…well you know. C’est la vie.

We’re probably going to combine Destination Tulane with Honors Weekend in April, seeing Spring Break is the week before that weekend and we could visit other schools then.
Is it evil of me to hope DS gets no other acceptances? Yeah, I’m selfish and evil.
Bad Daddy!!! Bad Daddy!!!
