SuMAC

ajimmykid, you sound as if I offended you! :( Sorry.

I don't mean to say you should definitely choose PROMYS over SuMAC. I just wanted to talk about my experience in case the OP was interested in it...which he definitely is since he directed questions toward me. I know I could have PMed him with my response, but I thought those interested in SuMAC might be interested in PROMYS too...and so might want to hear what I have to say.

I really have to concede that I have no knowledge about the type of people who attend SuMAC. I was drawing upon my experience at PROMYS when I said that, since I thought the two camps would be comparable...I guess I should have made that more clear.

And when I said that the choice to go to PROMYS was obvious, I was saying it lightly. OF COURSE it's up to you! I just have PROMYS pride :) .

although i'm not hoping to get into sumac/promys for college at all, i love math really

i was just wondering at college distributions

for sumac, is it mostly UCs or
ivy/stanford/mit people?

i turned in my application just don't want to be overwhelmed when i get there

Of the rising seniors at SUMaC '04 (about 15-20?) there were 8 who went to Stanford, 1 Yale, 2 MIT, 2 Harvard, 1 Brown, 1 Cal that I know of.

If you get in, you won't be overwhelmed. Rick will be sure to admit only those you can handle (and enjoy!) the work. No worries. If you want outside help the TAs/RAs are willing to help as are the other students.

so far, from our year, there are about 8 stanford admits, a couple MITs, a princeton, a caltech, a cambridge... those are just the early admits/early writes that i know of. there'll be more to report after this weekend. also, i don't know much about UCs, but don't they tend to draw from a largely californian population? the majority of SUMaC is from somewhere other than CA.

you shouldn't be worried about being overwhelmed at all. the environment is very supportive and collaborative, not competitive. everyone's there to learn more math and have a good time. sure, everyone's smart, but if rick accepts you, there's a good chance you are too. ;] oh, also, don't equate college acceptances with intelligence or math ability. much more to them than that!
