Does anyone know about Amadeus orchestra summer course? [Amadeus Orchestra Home page](http://www.amadeusorchestra.co.uk/index.php)

Thanks bluepearl - we know QP’s reputation, of course, but their website hasn’t been very detailed.

Didn’t get into that one I was waiting for…

It’s ok - I’m going to grad school for music history anyway, so the most important thing for me is to get straight A’s in school and that sorta thing and that’s what I’ve been doing…

So it’s all good :D

So, Cosmos, does this mean you’re going to England for the summer?

I’m surprised to hear you say you’re going to grad school for music history, after following all your successes with performance. But if you’ve found what makes you happy, that’s what counts.

Yes, I accepted the Aldeburgh invitation. Still waiting to hear back from one other place, but as of now it looks like I’ll be in England for part of the summer and working in NY at Lincoln Center for the rest of the time… Should be a fun summer!

Does anyone have insight into how admissions work at aspen? For example, if you apply to two studios and one teacher has told you in advance that they would like to work with you, but you get wait-listed, and then check in with that teacher who says that s/he ranked you high and is surprised to hear that, does it mean that the other teacher rated you very, very low? Or are other factors involved?

I do not have direct knowledge about this. My musician child, also a string player, has had her share over the years of fabulous acceptances and disappointing denials. I have a gut feeling about certain large studio-oriented programs like Aspen (I guess Bowdoin would be another) which is: ultimately it’s all about the teacher wanting you. If they want you bad enough, you’re in. If they want you bad enough, they’ll find some scholarship money for you. That’s it. If I were told ‘I ranked you very high and I’m surprised you didn’t get in’ – I would just have some doubts about the possibility of that actually being totally true.

So now somebody who’s a studio teacher with experience w/similar programs can chime in and tell me whether I’m way off base here…

Just to clarify, I would find believable that the teacher did want to work with you at one point, but then lucked out (well, from the teacher’s point of view, of course) and got a studio full of even better students to work with, and is not able to be honest with you it. I do not believe that all teachers operate this way, but I am certain that some do.

memake, thanks for clarifying that the teacher lucked out and filled his or her studio with better students. ;-)

glassharmonica,

Did your D request a partial session (less than 8 weeks) Aspen enrollment? Admissions will want to keep the studio full for the entire summer and may have selected a full time student over her, particularly if there was no one at your D’s level of ranking requesting the part time session that would complement her proposed weeks of attendance.

I’d call Aspen admissions for clarification. I suspect the quality of your D’s application and admission CD was not as much an issue as other factors beyond her control.

stradmom,

If your question means your D is deciding between Heifetz and Quartet Program - congratulaitons!

I know several violists, current major conservatory students who could choose from among several major summer festivals who have gone to Heifetz for the viola instructors in recent years.

I think glassharmonica’s D has attended both programs. Perhpas she’d give you some insights!

Thanks, Fiddlestix. She applied only to a half-session. It was hard to figure out what to do. She didn’t audition for a fellowship and it said on the website that this year they give finaid only for full session, and that it is not possible to switch to half-session if you are accepted for full session. The cost is so high that we decided to let apply for half-session only.

About the other two programs, I did PM stradmom.

Aspen cut back on faculty this year, and some faculty essentially take only their own students - I think Lipsett, for example, mostly teaches his own violin students from Colburn.
They took a big hit financially in the last couple of years (at the same time that they are planning a significant building project). Just a few years ago they talked about making it tuition free…but it is still a good deal, despite the price, if your student takes advantage of all the wonderful free concerts.

Thanks, fiddlestix! Just need to get through the next couple of weeks …

Today my daughter got an email from Aspen saying that she has been accepted…so I guess it was good that she contacted the teacher. Now I have to figure out how to pay for it.

Congratualtions to your D, glassharmonica. It was good that you did inquire and it’s also nice to know that their are teachers who don’t just say things to put someone off. She’s worked hard and has certainly earned this!

That’s great news about Aspen, glassharmonica! I hear that it is a wonderful place during the summer.

Great news about Aspen.

Has anyone’s S or D applied to Bowdoin this year, and/or received their notification letter yet?

Hello all! Congratulations to all of the acceptances the music students have received thus far! And thank you for your help for my son concerning whether to attend Yellow Barn or Brevard for composition. He has accepted the Yellow Barn offer.

One odd note- he has never even heard from Brevard. I know they extended their application period by one week… so maybe they are having delays in selection and notification. Last year my daughter heard back on March 19 for piano. It may also take longer for composition student selection. All of this is a moot point now- since S has already accepted YB. But it does make me wonder about what is going on at Brevard. I haven’t seen any posts here about Brevard acceptances either. Hmmmm…
