After browsing summer opportunities, I have been unable to find a clinical or summer enrichment program/ internship that has clinical experience, or educational enrichement in addition to research and doesn't cater exclusively to underrepresented minority groups. Does anyone know of a good summer clinical experience or research that includes some other activities? I am a sophomore undergrad, self design major in child health and human development. High grades, good academic standing, good recs...

just have to keep searching man, it's not that easy to find good experiences sometimes but they're out there! g'luck

... is there a hospital near your university? What have other premeds from your school done?

what about NIH internships?

Does working full-time during the summer count as an activity? I couldn't find anything as a freshman so I just took a job ( kinda needed the money anyway)

^ Yes, that is fine.

Let's be straight here - you can do anything during the summer - work, take classes, travel, research, be a bum, etc., but there are obviously certain things that will be better or worse. Research or a pre-med summer program are probably the most beneficial (but not always), but this doesn't mean that the other "activities" are not. A lot of how beneficial your summers end up being is dependent on how you "spin" the experiences when asked about them during your interviews or on essays.

Personally, other than study for the MCAT the summer after junior year, I did nothing medically related at all during my summers. My first summer I was a counselor at Space Camp, my second I went home and waited tables, and my third was spent studying for the MCAT and waiting tables. But, when the time came, I was able to talk about how I thought those jobs would make me a better physician in the future (which tied into my "why I'm interested in entering medicine" reasons).

Thanks, I was just wondering if anyone had heard of a good summer clinical program/ internship.

^Most of them have deadlines in Feb and March and sometimes in April, so it would be too late to apply now.
