Hi, I know it is little early to think about summer after senior, but I thought it would be better planning early. What will the best thing to do during the summer after graduate from a high school? Internship? Travel? Work? Or just being idle before go to college? If you have a good experience with your S or D, would you please share?

D, who had always done some sort of academic program in previous summers, chose to stay home and get a job. She earned spending money for college, and we got to see a lot of her. It worked out very well, and it felt good to have her around before she left the nest.

We told our kids "see that section on the cost of attendance site that says Misc."? That is what you have to cover." That last summer they worked. :)

There seem to be very few academic programs available for students in that particular summer. Both of my kids worked.

I worked a lot, practiced music a lot, and spent time with my friends. It was a great summer, and I made a lot of money by working many hours a week.

Both my Ss returned to the camps they had attended previously; one was in music camp and the other at an academic camp.

Our S worked a double job, life guard during the day and bus boy at Ruth Chris steakhouse in the evening. In previous summers he just worked the life guard job. The extra money came in handy because he was able to do a summer languarge immersion program after his freshman year of college. If he hadn't saved up, he wouldn't have been able to afford that luxury.

Making money and hanging out with friends was the way my son spent his summer.

I am not taking the summer off...I graduate May 24th and start classes June 11th.

Work, cover those "misc" expenses....just being idle before you go to college? not in my house.

My D did a little of both---she worked 2 part time jobs-3 or 4 days a week, plus one as an internship-for 1 or 2 days a week.Sometimes she worked 7 days straight!. She had to contact her University to set up the internship-they said she was the youngest student they had approached them about an internship-as most of their interns are jr and sr-but they were willing to make an exception-great experience. she had to write a couple of papers-submitted them online. The head of her department was the professor in charge. It gave her a perspective of what it would be like in the REAL world using the degree she was going to be taking in college.
DD had previously taken courses during the summer at UC, Cal State, overseas at Cambridge, and local cC.
The hardest part was lining up the internship. So, getting started during the winter break may be time well spent. G'Luck!

My son is planning on doing a Habitat for Humanity trip out of the country, which he has to be 18 to do without parents (he is going with family friends.) He'll need to work at a paying job the rest of the time. It isn't a long summer, just June, July and half of August for most.

My D plans to backpack in Europe following graduation for a month, then come back and work for another month for spending money before heading off to college.

Son took the summer off and just relaxed! He had attended summer enrichment programs and worked all thru HS--we thought that this would be the only summer he could really enjoy! He arrived at college rested, relaxed and ready to work!

My son will attend orientation at the college he chooses, then we will all go on a 2-week trip to Europe. After that, he might be going on a month-long trip with a friend. Otherwise, maybe working, maybe relaxing.

I want my D to sleep for three months.

Thank you all. I thought about some sort of internship(research) for summer, but getting a job also will be a great idea.

mammall---I think they deserve for it, after 12+ years of schooling.

My daughter and I are traveling to Europe together. We have planned this (well me more than her) since she started high school. Have any of you done a mother-daughter trip? Then she will come home and work at a day camp near our house. And I will try not to annoy her too much, ha ha

S1 worked all thorugh high school and has never stopped (now college jr)
S2 (h.s. senior) has worked all through high school and will continue his job until he leaves for college. He won't be working full time hours in the summer so there will be time for realxtion, trips, etc.
