Summer arts programs (Interlochen, etc)

Does anyone know of a summer program similar to Interlochen? My daughter is an intrumentalist. She really likes the idea of spending a summer making music at a high level, but also being surrounded by kids doing other creative things like art, dance, theater, etc. Idyllwild has been suggested to us. Are there other auditioned "arts" programs that she should look into? Thanks for any ideas.

French Woods?

My S really enjoyed Chautauqua

Thank you, glassharmonica. We looked French Woods over and it does look like a great program. It is probably a little too free-form for my daughter’s personality, but I’m going to pass it along to others. It’s nice to know about programs that encourage such full exploration of creativity, bringing out the best in each child.

We’ll check out Chautauqua later tonight, thanks cellomom2.

Walnut Hill also has multiple summer programs in multiple disciplines, but I think they might be on different campuses.

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan.

It’s all music, but my son really enjoyed BUTI (Boston University Tanglewood Institute). I’ve heard it may be discontinued, though.

Kinhaven Music School in Weston, VT. Great group of music professionals & educators and high level of playing (orchestra and chamber), but also downtime and fun activities. This has been a life-changing experience for my son, plus the surroundings are absolutely beautiful.

Thanks for all of these suggestions. My daughter is getting organized for audition material, and we’re putting together a list of options. Blue Lake is definitely worth looking into more, it does seem to offer a full side-by-side experience with other artistic disciplines. Chautauqua looks like a similar experience for college age students, what a great summer community.

My daughter has a friend who attended BUTI last summer and loved it, and she knows lots of kids who have attended Kinhaven. Greenwood, too. All full of engaged, creative young people. If she auditions, is accepted, and decides to attend any of these I’m certain she will have a full, rich summer.

Also just music, but Brevard Music Center in North Carolina is a great program as well. My D attended the HS Vocal Program, and really loved it! They have different divisions for HS and College level. Very talented faculty, and a lovely place to spend the summer!

Anyone had any experience with the Washington National Opera Institute? Thanks.

The WNOI is a good, basic and safe program based on art song rather than operatic arias. I’ve known kids who have attended and they all enjoyed it (and their parents were satisfied as well!). Most of the “extras” will be covered in more depth during freshman year in college, so you have to do the math and figure out if it’s worth it, especially if the student will be off to college in the fall.
