Summer before Freshman Year Opportunities?

I've been wanting to study abroad in Japan since I was 12. I've never been able to afford it however. So what I'm wondering is, will colleges allow you to study abroad the summer before college for credit?

I know that sometimes the college applys fin aid towards study abroad, so maybe I could do it that way for this summer? Or is this not possible?

Some colleges require foreign language courses, but can a good SAT II score in the language replace that?

If this summer isn't possible, how could I make it happen another summer? I don't think going during the school year would be beneficial.

I'm not sure where I'm going to college yet. But if a college doesn't offer a program in a particular country or school, could I go through another program and possibly get credit?
Basically, I just want to know how I could afford to go to Japan sometime soon- I've been wanting to for a VERY long time but just can't afford it.

Thanks.

Elizlan, lots of questions! I don't know of any college that will allow you to do a study abroad before you even start your first semester but every single college that I looked at with my kids offered many, many choices of study abroads including summer abroads.

Each college has it's own take on study abroad. For my daughter, study abroad was key so we made sure that when we visited the college we also visited the study abroad office. You can usually get the basic information just by visiting each colleges study abroads website.
