Summer before sophomore

what is your freshman( class of 2013)planning to do this summer?

Back to her day camp counselor job, if it’s available–the owner has said enrollment is down and he will have to cut staff. But she’ll have to find some kind of job, since she has to cover her entertainment costs and non-meal plan food expenses next year from her summer earnings.

Son is applying for a six week internship with the high-tech business arm of a foreign consulate where he has a connection…he plans to major in international marketing so this would be great. This would be in May and June, from right after school gets out until his paying job would start.
.
Last summer he was a counselor at a JCC day camp. They have asked him to return next summer, and have offered him a promotion (and more $$$) to coordinate the sports program for the K-3 camp. He also works at the day care before and after camp…about 55 hours/week. No time to spend the $$$$ he makes.

S wants to get a job as a bank teller. He’s never held a formal job before (he tutored math for other students in HS which paid very, very well). I think he would also like working with kids (his volunteer work in HS was all working with kids), so perhaps I should suggest applying as a camp counselor.

Katy,
make sure he applies to camp jobs NOW!

Most camps check in with the previous staff that they want to return over winter break, and then start talking to prospective hires…it’s such a popular job that slots fill quickly. Who wouldn’t like running and playing outdoors with adorable little kids all day?

boysx3 is right on the money! Just yesterday my D got her offer letter from the camp she worked at last summer, and they want her answer in two weeks. The letter mentioned that enrollment is way down, so I’m guessing counselor jobs will be hard to find this summer. I recommend sending a nicely done resume and cover letter to all the camps in the area, stressing childcare experience and any camp attendance (they like to know you’re the camp “type”). That approach snagged D three offers last summer. But be warned, the pay is not so great.

Bank teller was my job one summer, zillions of years ago. It was something of a disaster–my cash drawer never balanced at the end of the day. But it was a small bank in a small downtown and they were very forgiving. I really enjoyed getting to know all the regular customers, and I got a bunch of goodbye cards and baked goods at the end of the summer. I learned to deal with all kinds of people–both co-workers and customers, experience that served me very well in later jobs.

Last summer our D, who is currently a sophomore, stayed in DC and worked part time at the same work study job she had during the year. She also got a unpaid internship with the Council for American Islamic Affairs. She was the only non Islamic intern. She got an opportunity to organize some very interesting events and practice her Arabic. Fortunately she had free housing at my brother’s home.

This coming summer she has applied for a State Department Scholarship to study intensive Arabic in Jordan. If she doesn’t do get that she is hoping to go to India and work with visit friends and family who do land reform work in South India.
