Summer@brown

so i just joined and this is the first time I’ve posted anything so i could be doing this all wrong… but anyways,

I’m 15 and I’m going to apply to the summer@brown program, and i was wondering if y’all think i might be to young. i know the only prerequisite is that you have to graduate 9th grade, which i will by the summer, but i haven’t come across any reviews of it from anybody my age. If anybody has gone to summer@brown that just finished their freshman year did you feel too young? Or even if you’ve been to summer@brown and you were older, did it seem like a major party thing? my friend went one summer and said there was lots of drinking and partying but i’m not sure if i believe him…

ps. if i did this wrong could you tell me how to do it right please?

thanks! :)

You did it right, don’t worry!
I went to s@b summer before my senior year (so last summer) my roommate was a rising junior. I would say the majority of students I met were rising seniors but I don’t think you should worry about it too much. Honestly, I was impressed when somebody I met was a rising sophomore.
What’s great about doing it so early is that then you still have 2 more summers to go back! I don’t know if it is economically feasible for your family but it is such an awesome experience that you will want to go again!

It’s been a long, long time since I did summer@brown (2004), but when I was there there was definitely a fair amount of drinking and partying, especially among the groups of us that managed to befriend actual Brown students who were there. There were literally only 3 rules when I was there

No Drinking

No Drugs

You can’t sleep over in someone else’s room (although there was no curfew, rendering this rule meaningless).

One of my friends there was a girl who claimed she had gotten kicked out the year before because she got busted drinking. She said they wipe all record of you if you get kicked out, so the following year she was able to reapply and no one noticed. Not sure if this is true.

When I became a Brown student, the program became much, much stricter with curfews and being in the opposite sex’s rooms and such. Several of my friends were RAs, and I can assure you that the rules were relatively well enforced (i.e. the counselors didn’t go out of their way to catch you, but if they did, you got reported and you got in trouble)

I’m stunned the program lasted as long as it did running the way it did when I was there.

okay thanks guys!

i think i’m going to be attending this program, too!
past campers, any recommendations for classes in the global studies/history/econ department?

Few questions

I’m a rising junior who has currently added Number Theory: Introduction to Higher Mathematics and Techniques in Biochemistry to his schedule (both in the same 3 week session). The first class is 12:45-3:35, second is 3:50-6:40. Will this eat up too much of my spare time, or are there plenty of activities for the morning/evenings and weekends? If so, what activities?

Another question is, so i’ve signed up for my classes, and checked the “Make a payment” tab. The bill says $9922.00. Where are they getting this number? Taking the two courses in the same session should be about 7000-8000. Any other info on payment would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well i don’t know that much about it but on the acceptence letter there is a number you can call. I’m sure you could call and ask them about financial stuff.

You might not be counting room and board into your 7,000 to 8,000 range. If you read that taking two classes costs between those numbers, it could only be for the actual classes and the extra on your bill is room and board. Its definitely worth looking into though.
