Summer@Brown

I’m going to summer@brown this summer, and taking two one week courses that run concurrently, and then two weeks later, a two week course.

The thing is, the second one week course that i’m taking (fundamentals of calculus) has kind of been forced upon me (dad said I have to take it). I didn’t want to, but I agreed- only now, I’ve found out that taking concurrent courses may affect social life/overall experience? Considering I’m sort of socially awkward, and also the fact I live in India so the whole experience for me will be in a new country altogether, I’ve gotten a little nervous. So I just wanted to ask, how are the people there? What sort of crowd should I expect? Are majority of the students actually interested in the academic aspect of the program, or are they there just for the fun of it? Also, how much will the workload be of these two concurrent courses?

How was your overall experience at summer@brown, if you’ve attended?

Also i’ll be one of the youngest there- 15

My daughter took a 4 week writing class at Summer@Brown last year and loved it. That was the goal. She was considering taking two classes at the same time. I thought she was crazy. The idea was for her to take something she loved and work at it. One class gave her more opportunity to focus on her writing and get the most out of the opportunity. During the school year, her junior year, she worked very hard. It did not allow as much time as she would have liked to read and study the things she wanted.

While many kids in the class wrote well, I would not call the experience competitive. It is an opportunity. You get out of it what you put in to it.

She enjoyed it socially too. Like any new environment, the beginning can be difficult. You have to learn the logistics of getting around campus and make friends. Most kids find a group of friends fairly quickly.
