<p>D did a 3 week writing course several years ago – she’s now a rising college senior. She loved every minute of the program, got a lot out of the course, and declared it “awesome!” There were RA’s on each floor, but students had quite a lot of freedom, as I recall. They had Brown ID cards that let them use most campus facilities. There were a number of fun activities scheduled on weekends, but D spent a lot of time hanging out with friends, too.</p>
<p>I did two two week courses last year, and most of my friends who spent only two weeks found that it was the perfect amount of time, and it was definitely fun. There was always something to do and new people to meet.
You’re also completely free to do whatever you want on weekends provided you’re back by curfew. I knew some people who went out to New York on satudays and sundays. You have a lot of freedom, it’s basically like a mini college. Nobody’s going to wake you up or tell you where to go, I know people who didn’t even go to class… granted they also failed their pass/fail courses…
Everything that you choose to do at Brown is your own choice, I would definitely recommend going to class and taking what you can out of it. Also, if you’re in a class that you don’t like the feel of on the first day, I would suggest talking to the program advisor and switching out of it. It may be the professor or the set up, but I know lots of people who lost their motivation because they didn’t enjoy their classes/profs.
Have lots of fun, and bring tons of extra cash, you’ll need it :]</p>
<p>Just out of curiosity, how competitive is summer@Brown? Does it give you an edge when applying to Brown? Is it very selective?</p>

<p>Hi, I know that most of you guys happen to be in like high school, but I have a few questions about the SPARK program for middle schoolers because I’m only in 8th grade. Please answer them if you can. I’d really appreciate it:</p>

<li><p>Is the SPARK program a bit similar to the regular pre-college one?</p></li>
<li><p>How much freedom do they allow you to have? (I know that some prople said that for the pre-college program, you were allowed to go to the mall and stuff, so you could pretty much do whatever you wanted once you finished classes.)</p></li>

<p>And…that’s basically it. I’m going to the prpgram this summer, so I just want to know what I’m in for. Thanks ahead of time!!!</p>

<p>My DD (age 13 1/2 now) went to SPARK last summer after 7th grade. She felt that there was LITTLE freedom for the SPARK students. They had a few evening activities planned; however, that was it. The other “free time” was spent hanging out in the Quad - but they weren’t allowed to leave the area. They were “walked” around campus etc.</p>
<p>She did like SPARK and LOVED her class… but cant wait to attend Brown again with some “freedom” in the high school program.</p>
