Summer@Brown

I’m going to apply for Summer@Brown, and I want to know if there is an essay portion on Brown’s application that asks about why we chose brown? It seems it could help me out on that part of the application if I decide to go.

There are two sections that this may apply to:

Tell us about the academic areas which interest you most and your reasons for applying to Brown.

Who interested you in Brown (e.g., college counselor, Brown alumnus/a, admission officer, undergraduate, relative)?

Honestly, I woudln't write in doing the Summer@Brown program for either of these answers. They'll already know you did the program. Write something unique and eye-catching. A lot of kids do the Summer@Brown program; a lot don't get in.

how could I make it interesting? To be honest... I influenced myself to go to Brown.

Perhaps I can talk about what I liked about Brown from my visit? I'm pretty sure everyone does that as well. So I guess I have no idea.

Think about what you really like about Brown. Think about the usual stuff. For example, most people who apply to Brown are attracted to the open curriculum. (And there are many good reasons to like the open curriculum. Why you like it depends on who you are and what you feel you want to get out of your college experience. Definitely relate why, as opposed to "that," you like it on your application.) Then, think about the quirky stuff. Do you know a particularly awe-inspiring professor (who of course knows you well enough to consent to being mentioned on your application)? Do you really like the architecture of a certain building? Did your hero go to Brown?

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't mention your summer@Brown experience on your application. They won't automatically admit you because of it, but you'll understand the feel of the campus a lot better than someone who visited for just a day over the summer.

Good luck!

Who interested you in brown is basically a one-word answer. Well, one sentence if you're being formal.

And definitely shy away from answers like, "I like Brown because of its open curriculum." Or "I liked Brown when I visited." Make it much more personal. I talked about a specific class I visited and a specific professor, how they related to the major I was applying under, and why I thought that was important. Details. Personal details.

oh dead thread... i shall revive thee....
i wrote about two sentences about who/what influenced me to apply to brown... but i dont remember the rest of the app or what i wrote, darn shame, i have it saved on my comp though
