Hey, I have a question.

How does financial aid work during the summer? I want to stay here during the summer and take classes, but somewhere I heard that no financial aid is given for the summer.

What are some options?

There’s financial aid given during the summer. There just isn’t any Bright Futures, so it typically is only Pell Grants and student loans (or at least that’s been my experience).

If you go into your Financial Aid Toolkit under the Secure Apps tab in Blackboard, you can already apply for Summer Financial Aid.

ah ha! lol, thanks Pasbal! : ) Glad I got that taken care of, now I need to figure out this housing thing.

I did my housing application for next year (fall this year) does that application cover both fall and spring semesters?

I’m reallllly hoping that I can get placed into the new traditions hall this summer, and stay there for the remainder of my semesters here.

@Pasbal what are pell grants?

No more Pell money for summer for returning students who already got Pell grants for fall and spring semesters! Last year and year before students could get second Pells, but not this coming summer–the faucet was turned off by the feds. Fiscal Year 2011 appropriations eliminated the allowance of receiving up to two consecutive Pell Grant awards during a single award year. Beginning with the 2011-12 award year, you may receive only one Pell Grant award during a single award year. Eligible new freshmen at FSU beginning summer term before July 1 cutoff for new award year might get Pell grants for summer, but not most returning students who got Pell awards fall and spring 2011-2012. About only aid available for most students summer semester will be loans only.

@corbis- Yes, your application covers both Fall and Spring semesters.

Plus, will Traditions (Wildwood #3) be open for Summer? I thought it was scheduled for a Fall opening.

According to housing, Traditions WILL be open for summer, and first priority for Fall 2012-Spring 2013 is going to be those that are living there this summer. I don’t quite understand half the policies about that dorm though- and from the sound of it I’m not sure that Housing does either.

It’s really not a good time to try to get answers from housing either. I was just at their office the other day to inquire about something for next year, and the answer I got was rather convoluted. It’s like no one really knows what’s going on in housing. Which is concerning.

Oh wow, sounds like a lot of changes with the feds. May look like i’ll need to take out more loans.

Quick question, about the parents plus loans, are those federally funded? Like the students loans we receive? (Subsidize and Unsubsidized loans) Or are they from private agencies?

Cause I do have student loans, and if I’m correct unsubsidized loans accrue interest while you’re in school, whereas subsidize loans start 6 months after you graduate right?

PLUS loans are… different. Your parents have to apply for them, and the government will either accept or reject the application (much like a credit card). If your parents are accepted for one, they also have to start repayment right away (or at least this was how everything was explained to me when my family was looking into them).

You’re correct on unsubsidized vs subsidized. Sub loans don’t accrue interest but unsub loans do.
