Summer Community College Courses?

Are summer community college courses counted as part of the school year prior to the summer, or the next year (in terms of GPA calculation)?

For example, I’m currently a freshman, so if I took a summer class this summer (the summer after freshman year), would that be calculated into my freshman year GPA or my sophomore year GPA?

@NASA2014 I volunteer at an animal shelter and happen to like them?

I checked the University of California page and it says the GPA is calculated from the summer after ninth grade to the summer after eleventh grade.
