Summer experience

Does anyone have some insight on summer experience. Looking for some thoughts. Does anyone who attended feel that it was worth it.

Coach,

Perceived value is dependent on the needs of each student. $8,000 is A LOT of money for a four week experience just so that your child will have an easier time transitioning to college. In addition to the tuition cost, there are the travel costs. We are choosing not to participate.

I must say I have NEVER heard a negative thing about Summer Experience. Aside from the abundance of friends your child will make throughout the entire experience, it really does make that first few semesters a lot easier and a lot more stress free. Adjusting earlier than most to a college setting socially, intellectually and academically is only something that will help the student, and Summer Experience is talked about throughout the entire year by those who attend. I certainly wish more would consider, it really does work wonders for the adjustment period and it puts the students at an advantage right out of the gate.

My son really wanted to get a jump start on some core classes. The price for the credits is actually cheaper than term credits. I think at some point in order to graduate, students have to take additional Maymester, Study Abroad or Summer session to fulfill requirements. I wanted to get thoughts on the actual experience as well. I think that getting acclimated and making friends is helpful fo first time freshman, even though I not worried about transition. We really were not considering until we went for early registration. When my son heard about it, he then began considering.

Keep in mind, there is much more to the program than “transitioning to college”. You are taking classes and earning credit while you are at summer experience as well. The classes that you take during the summer gives you a head start on your college course load and allows for more flexibility down the road. Beyond that, all my friends who did summer experience (I didn’t personally, I was working) really enjoyed it and were able to meet a lot of people prior to coming in August.

Dont worry though, if your students can’t attend, they will not be “behind” or out of the loop. Its just an alternative way to get credits, and build your confidence coming to college. I did just fine getting used to college life even though I didn’t go.

Anyone out there who attended Summer Experience this past Summer? Was it worth it?
