Lately I've been looking into this program--it's affiliated with Georgetown, and you can earn college credit. I'm a junior in high school right now, and I would go this summer before my senior year. Georgetown is my first pick for college--I love it to death, and I've heard that this summer program could help me out a little when it comes to admissions. If anybody has been to any of Georgetown's high school summer programs, can you tell me how it was? Which one did you do? Was it interesting? What are the people there like, is it fun, or all work all the time? Do you get a lot of hands on job experience? How much freedom do you have? How was your time in general? Any info is appreciated--thanks!

I had planning to have a summer program in GU, hopefully it is helpful during the admission. But I was more interested in international affair program since last semester, it should be a valuable experience.

Gtown is also my favorite school right now!

Is it too late to apply? I realize it is rolling admissions, so would applying now (versus, say, back in January) put me at a disadvantage?

I went to the American Politics and Public Affairs summer program this past summer at Georgetown this summer and it was the best experience of my entire life. We got lectures from real Georgetown professors, stayed in the dorm, went to different places around DC, had a political campaign simulation, and just had a lot of fun. It was the most fun I have ever fun and I learned so much! We spent our morning either around DC or in the lecture hall and then in the evening we would work on our campaign. By 8 or 9 we were done with lectures and everything and could just hang out. They kept us pretty busy, but you didn’t notice it because it was so much fun. Plus we did get a couple afternoons off to go around Georgetown and if you didn’t want to do any of the Student Life activities, you could just hang out or do whatever. I would definitely apply. I’m not sure they have the same exact programs there this year, but from my friends I met there who went to different programs as well as the one I went to, all of them sound like they are a lot of fun.
Also, I didn’t apply till like March.

I did the International Relations program during the summer at Georgetown and I really recommend it. I don’t think it’s too late to apply, but you can contact them if you want specifics. From what I understand, getting into the summer programs is not nearly as competitive as getting into the universities for undergrad.

Even though the program was not for credit, it was great for two reasons. For one, it solidified my interest in International Relations and helped guide exactly what I want to do in IR. Second, and equally important, was an introduction to what Georgetown is really like. I had nearly memorized the website, talked with admissions, done all the “research”, but living at Georgetown, going to Georgetown classes with Georgetown professors was an entirely different experience. I was able to get the magical “feel” of the campus that so many talk about, which helped me prioritize my college applications and talk about my specific Georgetown experiences in my application.

To answer your specific questions: the people are fantastic - many are from international backgrounds and are fascinating to talk with. LOL it is not all work in the least. For me, I learned when I wanted and then we hit the town at night (in an innocent, tourist way) when we wanted. Everything is scheduled super tight, so we were up at like, 7 am and in our dorms at 11 pm or later. I wouldn’t have changed a single thing about the schedule though - it was a blast.

Uh… I am not entirely sure how IR would be “hands on” but we did do a really awesome simulation that I learned quite a bit from. There were some GREAT professors, as well as some seriously boring ones. The good from the program far outweighed the occasional boring lecture. We heard from the CIA, NSA, international law makers, absolutely thrilling.
