One of my son’s graduation requirements is to have an intermediate facility with a modern language. Because of his disabilities, he is unlikely to be able to achieve that with his college’s language classes. It would be nice if they would waive the requirement, but it looks like they will not.
Can anyone recommend a good summer immersion program for Spanish?
My son did several different language programs abroad for Arabic. The best one was CET because not only did they have you sharing a dorm with a local student, but they also had all the participants pledge to only speak Arabic. Unfortunately they don’t seem to have a Spanish program. SIT had family homestays, but some of the families didn’t actually speak Arabic, while others didn’t actually interact with the students. If possible look for a language pledge requirement.
Depending on the disability, the Penn State summer intensive program could work well because it focuses on speaking (there’s writing, but mostly to prepare for be reinforce active use.) Beware, though, that “intensive” is not a joke - don’t plan on doing anything else in eight weeks.
I concur with @MYOS1634 ; these summer intensive classes from my own experience are brutal.
While you do not mention what his disabilities are (nor is it important for you to), I would suggest he speak with an adviser and the Office of Disability Services. Some colleges, while they may require a student to first try to fulfill the FL requirement, may allow a substitution of a foreign cultures class.
And just as an FYI, my son had a C in Arabic freshman year, a B sophomore year after a summer program, and an A senior year after two semesters in Jordan - the first of the two was with the language pledge the second had an internship.
Middlebury is the gold standard for intensive summer learning!
However, it’s selective - it’s worth applying to but it can’t be the sole avenue pursued.
I know how to use Google and have already Googled, but I was hoping for knowledgeable comments from other CC people. Which I got. Thanks, knowledgeable people!
I’ve heard great things about the Middlebury program. However, I don’t imagine a selective program would work for a student who has a language disability. I’m hoping for a program that will take him as he is.
Yes, that was my understanding o what your request implied, which is why I listed the Penn State intensive summer program. It’s non selective, designed for undergrad and grad students who need to complete language requirements quickly for whatever reason.
Can anyone recommend something overseas, for Spanish? My son is interested in medieval history, so Spain would be a good place to go to. It’s scorching in the summer, but after all, Spanish people live there all year round.
Oviedo would be good, it’s a medieval town, not as hot as other parts of Spain, its university offers immersion programs in the summer, and you can get to the coast by coach (about 1 hour to Playa de San Lorenzo). http://www.uniovi.es/en/estudios/idiomas/espanyol
If he wants immersion in a language without formal instruction, you could consider something like having him WWOOF for the summer. Another option would be to look for something on workaway.com. Depending on his learning style, he might actually do better without formal instruction and the experience could really help him boost his confidence in the language.
