Hey guys. I’m currently an Undergrad at a different school (rising Junior) and I’m coming to UMich this summer to do research and take a class or two. I was hoping someone could give me a rundown on the social scene in Ann Arbor. Bars, places to hangout, etc etc. I’m hoping to make some friends in these summer classes, but I’d like to see what info y’all can give me. I’d like to get out and have some fun while I’m up here so yeah haha.
There are not many students staying in town over the summer. To make some friends in your class may be your best bet. Nevertheless, make sure you check out the Art Fair in mid July. It is the biggest event in town and you will see a lot of people coming from all over the world. Last year, there were world famous soccer teams playing in the stadium in early August. I hope they will have something like that this summer.
I am not a student but my boy is, and although he has never stayed over in Ann Arbor during the summer weeks, I would expect there is no lack of things to do over the summer. There are currently over a 1,000 clubs at UM and I am sure they don’t shut down over summer. (http://parents.umich.edu/studentlife/recreation.php). Get out, get involved in intramural activities, local trips, etc.
I think a smart student would attend U of M during the fall (football season), Miss the cold winter semester, and go the entire summer. Summer in Ann Arbor is great. It’s beautiful there. I attended summer school there.
As PeterW indicates there are over 1,000 clubs and some of them must publish calendars…get plugged into whatever passes for a central calendaring function and the activities will probably take care of themselves. Same comments abou the town…I would imagine the chamber of commerce or similar entity would be able to tell you what is calendared. I would imagine Hill auditorium has events, the university proper will have events and lectures. There are several local theatres which run film series. There should be plenty do if you can access the scheduling…or maybe this is your summer to write an app which consolidates the social scene and let’s you use a bit of low grade AI to learn your profile.
@gratefulalum considering the Summer/Spring semester course catalog is so limited that almost no student could actually do what you said and still graduate in the same amount of time, I’d have to say that’s actually probably not a very smart thing to do.
@futuresuperman Im a sophomore and Ill transferring and taking classes over the spring and summer. I’m still undecided about living at home or finding an apartment.
