Hi everyone,
I’m a rising senior in Northern New Jersey and since I’m applying to colleges in the fall, I’m looking for a summer internship that will boost my resume. I know that it’s kind of late to be looking and so I want to find any good opportunity that hasn’t already passed. I’m interested in law, politics, business, and psychology. I would love an internship in Washington DC, but otherwise, I’m open to anything in the North Jersey/NYC area. If I could get a position with the UN or something with the government in DC, that would be optimal.
Thanks a lot
At your age the best bet, by far, is through personal/family connections. This the case through Soph year of college.
This is really really late and everyone wants the glitzy locations.
Volunteer in your local area with a state representative, local social service organization, refugee resettlement program, Meals on Wheels, etc. Boots on the ground experience is going to look better and also going to give your resume some credibility when later applying for internships.
Good advise from snowball city. See if there are any local elections and contact the campaign office. You will learn how to run a campaign and network. Invaluable experience.
There’s a primary election for Governor next month in NJ – go volunteer, hit the pavements. Then work the campaign of whichever candidate wins the primary for your preferred party.
In all honesty anything productive you do with your time would be just fine. The above suggestions are great, but if you decide to go out and get a summer job to earn some money (and maybe volunteer for the election in your spare time) that would also be looked on favorably.
It is highly unlikely that as a HS student this late in the game that you will get a plum internship in DC or at the UN (unless you have strong personal connections).
