My son may have an opportunity to work for a medical surgical co that sells cadaver tendons and ligaments for use in knee surgeries. This would be an unpaid internship working in various aspects of the company from finance to inventory, to standby in surgeries, etc. My son is graduating from high school June 16th and has been shadowing the owner’s of the company which is a successful
Start up with Cal Poly grads at the hem. My son will be attending CP SLO this fall 2017. Would he be better off working this internship for no pay but fantastic experience or to stay at his paying job for the summer?
It depends on what he’s looking for and needs. If he needs the money, then the paying job is probably better. If he doesn’t need the money and the internship is relevant experience for his major, I would think the internship would be better both for the experience and how it will look on his resume. I’m assuming the paying job is not relevant to his major.
As @berkeleymom4 alluded, there more info would be good to have. The internship would be a no brainer if he is in a related major, the company is relatively known in the industry and money is not a big issue. It increases his chances to getting a real and good internship at the end of his freshman and sophomore years, since previous relevant work experience would make him stand out when applying for internships.
Thank you for your thoughts and input. He has saved quite a bit of his earnings from his job at a grocery store and this would be hands on top level experience in a company that would relate to his major of economics. Plus, I respect the owner’s who have engineering degrees from CP SLO. They really want to help my son gain valuable business experience.
They really should be paying him minimum wage or a stipend.
He could still work the grocery store on weekends for money.
@suzyQ7 that’s a great idea!!
