I am very curious about the same, I will probably have him start preparing the audition requirements but will wait on everything else until they release more details
Tanglewood on line is not doing it for my daughter! Seems the real experience is being there. I desperately hope she can do something in person. she’s so done with on line!!! Seems some of the smaller program have a higher likelihood of running.
Just announced Young Performers Program (age 10-19) at Music@Menlo will not take place this summer. I am guessing the program for older age must be still on.

Anyone know anything about Madeline Island CHamber music program? Any first hand experience?
I have heard wonderful things about Madeline Island! Two dear friends (violinists) both went and loved it, one of them several times. Extremely high-level players the pair of them, too!
Thank you! Do you happen to know their approximate age(s) when they attended?
They were in the middle of undergrad - both went the summer after junior year if I recall correctly.
NYU Summer Strings Intensive is online again this year. My DS21 did the program last summer online and enjoyed it, even though he would have preferred to be there in person.
D got accepted by Bowdoin Festival. Email I received today says they are still planning to do in person although there is no guarantee.
I sincerely hope it happens because I don’t want to see her cry when/if cancelled like last year.
@Violin87 Congratulations!! My D (viola) was also accepted at Bowdoin. So happy! We’re waiting to hear back from Heifetz. She did the virtual Heifetz last summer. This year they have a hybrid version. I just really need my daughter to go make music with other kids this summer.
Has anyone heard from Heifetz recently?
Yes. My D received her acceptance on Sunday. She’s so excited! Interestingly they gave a very short time period for deciding. We had to let them know by Tuesday that she would be coming. My guess is that they probably are going to be sending out the second round of offers pretty soon based upon those who declined.
My younger son who is an instrumentalist received an acceptance email from Interlochen today for their one-week advanced institute. Very thankful since it’s the only in-person summer camp application he submitted.
Congrats to your S, @RachelParent! Wonderful to be in person—especially at magical Interlochen! Hope he has a rewarding, enhancing, transformative week! It can be the perfect place to make connections, and explore making music at a high level with other like minded folks.
Our summer festival status so far: We applied to two sessions at each of three programs. My daughter was rejected for Bowdoin, accepted for Interlochen’s one-week viola intensive and waitlisted for their orchestra. It looks like Brevard extended their application deadline to 3/31 so I suppose we won’t hear from them for many weeks.
Interlochen’s reply date is 4/1. My daughter is not thrilled with the idea of “only one week” but selfishly, I’d be pretty happy with that for her last summer with us - especially if we can do a little traveling to connect with family.
Congrats! So excited for you and your S. Wanted to do the same for my S but the camps are so early in the summer for those of us on the east coast! Maybe next year when it doesnt interfere with graduations! Will keep your name to follow up on how it went!
I’m laughing, because here in the Northeast, while they’ve set a graduation date, we just cannot see them being able to do it safely even outdoors - with only two guests/person, plus the teachers and students, that’s talking 2000 people. Space them six feet apart on the lawn and have them all mask? And if it rains?
Congrats on the in-person summer programs, even if only one week. At least it’s something in-person this summer.
BTW, almost every person, both parent and student, speaks of that last summer home before college being very challenging. The student has two feet out the door, wants more independence and less supervision. The parent is desperately trying to complete the parenting job, getting the kid ready for leaving the nest, and trying to strike a balance between parenting, and allowing the kid more freedom. The parent’s vision of that last summer is of holding the child in a close embrace, while the child’s vision is “Let me outta here!”
My husband tells the story of his last summer before leaving to attend college 800 miles away. He was working full time as a short order bkfst and lunch cook, and staying out late, just hanging out on the beach or golf course with his summer romance. Really burning the candle at both ends, but hey, he was 18 and in love, and no driving was involved. His mother was yelling at him to be in by midnight, and finally, his father said, “Doris, in 6 weeks you won’t know where he is, any time of day or night! Leave the kid alone!”
So don’t romanticize that last summer at home, and if tensions arrive, try to be lenient.
Oh my goodness! @parentologist is speaking the truth with that last post!
Oh boy yes. “Fouling the nest…” And friends are a transitional bridge out of family and on to college so they tend to spend all their time with friends.
Thanks @ mom2clarinetobsessedkid It is such a beautiful campus I think it’s worthwhile to plan for a vacation near the lake area.
@helpingthekid73: yes we will surely be in touch and I will keep you informed.
Our schools finish by the end of May, which really helps with the summer planning. The only thing is the plane tickets. Airlines offer free change and one-year credit but no full refund. In the past, I would always purchase all tickets way ahead. However, this year for COVID19 reasons, I am still waiting for more assurance and confirmation.
Speaking of the last summer for seniors, I happen to have one at home. He is getting very sweet, almost like the dream kids you only learn from the neighbors . He helps out with household work such as cooking and is very kind to us and his brother. I think the thoughts of leaving us in the foreseeable future definitely made him very grateful for what he has right now. I truly enjoy every minute with him knowing this won’t last forever. For that reason, I try to have our vacation planned around the kids’ camp time and destinations so that we can enjoy this summer as a family. Such a special time!
