So I'm a freshman at the moment who plays sax, viola, recently started piano, and have been taking ABRSM music theory and am currently working towards taking grade 8 exam. I want to attend a summer program for classical saxophone that has more of a college feel than camp. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Money is not a problem, nor is location. I have done NYSSMA, and the past two years I performed a level 6 and both times received a 99. Last year I played Scaramouche by Milhaud. I want a competitive environment. I wish this camp to be something where I can see if I wish to work towards a music major. Thank you in advance for suggestions.

You must attend NYSMF. NYSMF.org – it is called New York Summer Music Festival, and it is for students in grades 7-12. you can study jazz, classical – the teachers are amazing.

Be happy to give you more information about it if you’d like

Hi - I joined here looking for reviews or info on NYSMF, so I’m glad to find this thread! My 17 year old daughter is interested in the Flute Institute there this summer, but I’d really like to hear some reviews before we start sending money. She has attended Crane Youth Music for the last three years and feels like she’s ‘outgrown’ that program at this point. Being that this is her last summer at one of these programs (she’ll be a senior next year), we’d like to make it count… but at the same time, NYSMF/IFI combined is way more expensive than I’m comfortable with. The only videos I’ve found online seem to feature much younger kids, and since the program is open without audition, I’m wondering what the level of most participants would be.

Thanks!

Beth

I would love to hear more, however if auditions are not required as YueYang96 stated, is it truly competitive?

Disappointed there haven’t been any replies to this thread. Good luck with your decision, SaxChick! Still not sure what my daughter is going to be doing.

Forget NYSMFF for a 17 year old. They have exceptionally strict chaperone rules…students can not even walk across campus alone. THey are never allowed off campus unless its a group trip. My 15 year old found it oppressive–I cant imagine what a 17 year old would think!

Does anyone have opinions regarding the sax program and setting/restrictions on Tanglewood or Brevard? Also,i was wondering about the carnegie Mellon summer music program, if it was any good.

SaxChick, you may want to post in the Music Major forum. There’s lots of parents and students there with many years’ experience with summer and pre-college music programs. Search the threads there for Tanglewood.

Hi everyone, please feel free to PM me about NYSMF, and I’d be happy to discuss it. NYSMF does have a strict supervisory policy; however the staff is extremely friendly and their first priority is the safety of your child.

The only time their policies will seem extremely strict is if they feel that one of the students requires “extra” supervision.

I know their program extremely well as I went to their camp when I was much younger. I have also had a number of my students attend NYSMF and it truly is a special place for any talented young musician.

ProfHill, you don’t have enough posts to make PM’ing worthwhile yet (you can’t reply until you have 15 posts).

I am less concerned with the strictness of supervision than with the quality of the programme, specifically, the level and involvement of the students and faculty. Are the students serious about their music, ensembles and committed to practice? Are the faculty willing to “push” the students to grow in their technique?

I didn’t think the camp had been around long enough, in its current iteration, for anyone to have attended when they were “much” younger.

The website is really engaging, and NYSMF seems to have lots of great stuff going on. But some “real life” insight from parents who have had kids there, or students themselves, would be most helpful.

Anyone?
