Hi All,
Since I’m doing research this summer (no classes, so housing requirement doesn’t apply) I’m planning to live off-campus.
My girlfriend was also thinking about coming to Boston, and we had already picked out an apartment - I was going to pay the first month’s rent today.
But, since she has not heard back from any of the 12 internships & 4 REU’s that she’s applied to yet, she’s thinking about waiting on committing to an apartment until she does hear back (likely early/mid April) so there’s less risk of her leaving me paying the rent alone (feasible for me, but will be tight).
Our question for you: Can we reliably find an apartment for the summer if we wait until mid-April?
Thanks,
Julian
How did you pick out an apartment? Are you planning to sublet or was it a summer lease?
Mid-April is slightly late, but waiting another month should be okay - sublets for the summer are relatively easy to find. Usually there’s more apartment available in the summer than students in the city, so they will be available through the summer as well.
We picked out the apartment through craigslist and a visit - a nice furnished room in a 3BR by Boston U Medical.
I’m aware of Northeastern’s apartment finder, also looked at some there. Picked this one because of location and that it has an awesome kitchen. It was sublet - May through end of August. At the point where they’ve sent me the initial information form (for the landlord to do a credit and background check) and I told them that I should have the first month’s rent before the end of the week.
I feel bad getting cold feet at this point in the process, but it sounds like waiting another month may be a good idea
Yeah, I would wait it out.
For future looking, NEU’s housing groups on facebook have TONS of summer sublet advertisements posted there. That plus the off-campus apartment finder would be where I would try to stick to.
Yes…wait. There are tons of apartments for sublet in the summer. Students have to sign a 12 month lease, but most go home for the summer. Boston is full of empty apartments in the summer.
Update: just signed a sublet. Finding a nice place mid-April was no problem
