Summer Plans - help!

Hi everybody,

I'm in a bit of a sticky situation here and I'd really appreciate some help! I'm a sophomore. I'm interested in the humanities and social sciences and would most likely like to major in Pre-Law or Political Science. I plan to apply to HYP and other Ivy Leagues, and I know that these highly selective schools usually expect applicants to have done something phenomenal or at least related to their majors over the summer.

For this reason, in early January, I started emailing a bunch of representatives and delegates from my state for internship and/or volunteer opportunities. I emailed members of the House of Delegates and the VA General Assembly. I would have applied for internships with senators, but they typically don't accept high school students. I also applied for an internship with the National Census Bureau (they do accept high school students). A few local delegates emailed me back, asked for a resume, and then told me they would get back to me. However, none of them have, and I'm beginning to get worried. I didn't apply to any other programs or positions for this summer because I was expecting that at least one delegate would offer me a position.

So now, I have two options: 1) I could call up some local law firms and ask if they have any unpaid internship or volunteer openings. Since I'm interested in majoring in law, I figured this might provide me with good experience. 2) I might take a college class over the summer. My plan was to do an internship this year and then take a college course next summer, but it might be best if I take the course this summer and then apply for more internships next year. However, most deadlines for college courses have passed.

What do you guys think? I realize that it's still pretty early and some of the delegates I emailed might still offer me a position, but I don't want to get my hopes up only to have them crushed and then not have a fallback plan. Should I go with option #1 or #2? Are there any other internship or prestigious summer opportunities in Northern Virginia/D.C. area that I'm not aware of and that still have deadlines open? I'm just really confused at this point and I'd love it if you guys could help me out. Thank you in advance.
